Historically exterior lighting was always mains voltage (230v) however over the last 15 years there has been a massive shift to low voltage garden lights.

Low voltage garden lighting started with Halogen lights and in recent years, LEDs are now the light source to choose.

Low voltage means there's a transmitter or LED driver and the electricity is being transformed therefore the 230 volts (UK) is being brought down to 24 or 12 volts.
