A Colour Changing Ground Light You Can Park On
This is the biggest of Collingwood's tilt adjustable ground lights, taking a 193mm cut out and sitting flush in the surface once it is in. The whole optical assembly tilts by up to 25 degrees, so instead of firing a fixed beam straight up you can lean the light onto a wall, a tree trunk or a doorway and still walk or drive over the top of it. It runs RGBW, which means full colour change plus a proper 3000K warm white rather than a washed out approximation of white mixed from coloured diodes.
316 Stainless Steel Over Anodised Aluminium
The visible part is the bezel, and it is 316 stainless steel with a fine brushed finish that reads as a soft satin grey rather than a bright chrome. Underneath, hidden in the ground, the body is anodised aluminium with deep cooling fins. That pairing matters more than it looks. 316 is the marine grade, so the ring that sits exposed in the paving copes with salt air and winter grit, while the aluminium underneath does the job of pulling heat away from the LEDs. Against grey granite setts, buff sandstone or dark porcelain paving the brushed steel stays quiet and does not fight the surface it is set into.
How It Works
Inside the bezel is a cluster of individually lensed LEDs on a tilting plate. Collingwood sets the tilt with a knob, so the aim is adjusted from above once the unit is seated and can be set after the paving is down. The beam is 40 degrees, which is a useful middle ground: tight enough to make a defined pool of light on a wall, wide enough not to look like a spotlight.
Power is 7W on red and 9W on green, blue and white at 3000K, with a CRI of 80. This is the low voltage Class III version, so it needs a separate Collingwood driver, which is not supplied with the light, and the fittings wire in series from that driver. It arrives already wired with a one metre cable tail so the installer has something to work with, and Collingwood supplies an installation tube for setting the housing into the ground. Cut out is 193mm, the fitting measures 210mm across by 195mm deep, and it weighs 3.3 kg.
Where It Works Best
The drive over rating is what decides most of these installations. Rated to a 2000kg static load and to vehicles passing at up to 15mph, it goes into driveways, turning circles, courtyards and parking bays where a walk over only fitting would eventually fail. Set into a driveway it can graze a house front or light a boundary wall in colour for an evening and then sit at warm white for the rest of the year. It works just as well in a patio, a terrace edge or a set of wide steps, and the 193mm size suits larger paving units where a small ground light would look lost. Because the head tilts, it also earns its place tight against a wall or at the base of a specimen tree, where a fixed uplight would simply throw its beam into the sky.
The IP67 rating is well above the IP44 minimum that applies in a bathroom, and the product is classed for bathroom zone 2, so the same fitting can be recessed into a wet floor indoors. Our guide to bathroom lighting zones explains how those ratings are applied.
