Wall controls for colour changing light
Most colour change lighting hides its controls inside an app. This Collingwood plate puts them back on the wall, where anyone in the house can reach them. It is a touch sensitive glass panel that talks to Collingwood's RGBW fittings over radio frequency, so a guest can dim the garden or shift it from warm white to deep blue without hunting for a phone first.
Because the commands travel by radio, no signal cable has to be run between the plate and the lights. That is the practical part. Colour control can be added to a wall position without chasing a data run across the building.
The black glass version
This is the black plate, product code CCWALLRFB. The front is one flat sheet of dark glass with no raised buttons and nothing that moves, so the whole face wipes clean in a single pass. The graphics sit under the glass in white: four numbered keys along the top for zone selection, a full colour wheel in the centre with a power symbol at its middle, and the letters R, G, B and W across the bottom edge. There is an S on the left of the wheel and a fade and timer symbol on the right.
Switched off, it reads as a near black square. Against a dark painted wall or a deep grey plaster finish it almost disappears. Against pale walls it becomes a deliberate graphic detail, which is usually the point of choosing black over white. Collingwood makes the same plate in white as CCWALLRFW if you would rather it blended into the wall instead.
How It Works
The plate is a transmitter, not a driver. It does not carry the load for the lights themselves. It sends radio frequency commands out to the Collingwood colour change receivers and drivers, and those do the actual switching and colour mixing at the fittings.
Touch the wheel to choose a colour, touch the centre to bring a zone on or off, and use the numbered keys to pick which of the four zones you are speaking to. The zones can be driven together so a whole scheme changes at once, or handled separately so each area holds its own colour and brightness.
Collingwood specifies a 240V AC supply at the plate, so this is a wired accessory rather than a battery remote. The face measures 86mm by 86mm, the standard UK single gang plate size, with a depth of 30.5mm behind it. What you receive is the control plate on its own. The RGBW fittings, and the receiver or driver they run from, are bought separately.
Where It Works Best
It takes a switch position on an interior wall, usually just inside the door of whichever space the lighting serves. One of the most common jobs is running colour change garden lighting from indoors. The fittings sit outside in the weather, the plate stays dry in the hallway or on the kitchen wall beside the bifold doors.
Indoors it earns its place on a media wall, in a cinema room, behind a home bar, or on a stairwell run where the colour is doing mood rather than working light. With four zones on one plate it also makes sense as a single point of control in a small commercial space, a showroom or a treatment room, where staff need to change a scene quickly and reliably without opening an app.
Mount it indoors only. At IP20 the plate has no protection against water at all, so it is not for a wall that catches rain, spray or hose down cleaning, and that includes an open porch.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked in LED specifically since 2002. That is a long run in a field where plenty of names only turned up once LED had already become the default. The brand states it was among the first to put fire rated, sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products in front of the UK electrical wholesale trade. Collingwood also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, which places it in the top 5% of the companies EcoVadis assesses worldwide for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Five year warranty.
- Rated IP20. That covers protection against fingers and solid objects larger than 12.5mm, with no protection against water, so the plate is strictly for indoor positions.
- Product code CCWALLRFB. The same plate is made in white under the code CCWALLRFW.
- Face size 86mm by 86mm, depth 30.5mm.
- Collingwood specifies a 240V AC supply to the plate. It is wired in, not battery powered, and there is no plug.
- Controls up to four zones, together or independently, across Collingwood's RGBW colour change range. It is a control accessory only and produces no light of its own, so it has to be paired with compatible Collingwood colour change fittings and their receiver or driver.
- Touch sensitive glass means no mechanical buttons to wear out over time.
- Care: wipe the glass with a soft dry or barely damp cloth. Do not spray cleaner straight at the plate, and keep abrasives away from the printed graphics.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Does the Collingwood Smart RF Wall Control Plate need batteries?
No. The Collingwood Smart RF Wall Control Plate is a wired control and Collingwood specifies a 240V AC supply at the plate. It is installed into a wall position by an electrician rather than stuck to the wall like a battery remote.
What lights can the CCWALLRFB control?
The CCWALLRFB controls Collingwood's RGBW colour change lighting. It sends radio frequency commands to the Collingwood receivers and drivers that run those fittings, so it will not operate lights outside the Collingwood colour change system.
Can the plate be fitted outside to control garden lighting?
No, the plate itself must be mounted indoors, because its IP20 rating gives it no protection against water. It can still run outdoor Collingwood RGBW fittings from an indoor wall, since the commands reach them by radio rather than through a cable.
How many separate areas can one plate control?
One plate handles up to four zones. Each zone can be set to its own colour and brightness, or all four can be driven together so the entire scheme changes at the same time.
What size is the Collingwood RF wall control plate?
The plate measures 86mm by 86mm across the face with a depth of 30.5mm. The 86mm square face is the standard UK single gang plate size, so it lines up with other square faceplates on the same wall.
