A Colour Changing Ground Light You Can Drive Over

This is the RGBW version of Collingwood's Tilt ground light, sized for a 147mm cut out. Two things separate it from an ordinary recessed uplight. It changes colour, running red, green, blue and a warm white at 3000K from the same fitting. And the optic inside tilts. A knob on the body swings the light distribution up to 25 degrees off vertical, so you can aim the beam at a wall or a tree instead of firing it straight up into the sky.

316 Stainless Steel Bezel, Anodised Aluminium Body

The only part you see once it is installed is the bezel, a brushed 316 stainless steel ring held down by four screws. 316 is the marine grade of stainless, which is why this fitting copes with salt air that would pit a lesser steel. Everything below ground level is anodised aluminium, finned to move heat away from the LEDs. The whole unit measures 160mm across and 156mm deep and weighs 1.6kg. Set into block paving, sandstone or poured concrete it reads as a small silver disc rather than a light fitting, and the brushed finish sits quietly against grey porcelain, buff stone and dark setts alike.

How It Works

This is a low voltage Class III fitting, so it does not connect to the mains on its own. It needs a Collingwood driver, sold separately, and the fittings wire in series along the run. Collingwood supplies the Tilt range with an installation tube, which is bedded into the ground first so the light can be dropped in afterwards and lifted back out for service. The fitting arrives already wired with a 1 metre cable tail, which saves fishing for a joint at the bottom of a hole. Draw varies by colour, 3W on red and 4W on green, blue or white at 3000K, delivered through a 40 degree beam with a colour rendering index of 80.

Where It Works Best

Driveways first. The static loading capacity is 2000kg and it is rated for vehicles crossing it at up to 15mph, so it can go where the cars actually run rather than in a safe strip off to one side. Patios, terraces, thresholds and walk over paths suit it just as well. Aim one at a rendered wall, a specimen tree or a run of clipped hedging and the colour change starts to earn its keep, warm white on an ordinary evening and a colour when the occasion calls for it. The IP67 rating means the housing is sealed against dust and against temporary immersion, which matters in a ground pocket that fills with rainwater.
