A step light that hides its own glare
Most round ground lights have one problem: the light source itself is visible from above, so you catch a bright dot every time you glance down at your feet. The GL019 Eyelid solves that with a lens shaped like, well, an eyelid. It pushes all its output downward and to one side, so the beam lands on the step or path edge in front of it while the fitting itself stays dark and unobtrusive.
Stainless steel, two colour temperatures
This version is built from 316 stainless steel, the marine grade used where salt air and standing water are a real concern. It's available in 2700K for a warmer, more traditional glow, or 3000K for a slightly whiter, crisper light. Both use the same body and lens, so the choice comes down to which colour temperature suits the rest of your outdoor lighting.
How It Works
- The lens is asymmetric rather than a plain dome, so light spreads down and to one side instead of in every direction.
- It's a low voltage fitting running at 1W (350mA) or 2W (700mA), which means it needs a separate LED driver sized for the number of fittings on the run; it will not work wired straight to the mains.
- Fittings are wired in series and classed as Class III for electrical safety.
- It's dimmable, provided the driver on the circuit supports dimming.
Where It Works Best
The small 33mm cutout means it fits neatly between decking boards, in paving joints, or set into a low wall or step riser, so it's a natural choice for lighting a run of garden steps, a path edge, or a driveway boundary. Because it's rated IP68 and built in 316 stainless steel, it also holds up on coastal projects, near swimming pools, or anywhere the ground gets properly wet rather than just damp.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED fittings from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has worked purely on LED technology since 2002. The brand says it was among the first to bring fully waterproof, sealed for life LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market, which is exactly the kind of engineering a ground light like this one depends on. Collingwood has also been awarded a Gold medal by EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Comes with a 7 year guarantee from Collingwood Lighting.
- Rated IP68, built to cope with standing water, coastal salt spray and being walked over.
- Made from 316 stainless steel with Class III low voltage construction.
- 33mm cutout and 55mm fitting depth, so it suits tight step and decking gaps.
- Runs at 1W or 2W and needs a separate LED driver; it does not include one.
- CRI of 80 for reasonably accurate colour rendering outdoors.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician, even on low voltage circuits like this one.
Questions People Ask
- Does the GL019 Eyelid come with a driver included? No. It's a low voltage fitting rated at 1W or 2W, so it needs a separate LED driver sized to the number of fittings on the circuit.
- Why is the beam shaped like an eyelid instead of a plain circle? The lens is asymmetric, so light is pushed downward and to one side rather than spreading evenly. That keeps the light source itself hidden from above, so steps and path edges are lit without any glare shining back at you.
- Can this ground light cope with a coastal or waterlogged site? Yes. It's built from 316 stainless steel and rated IP68, the grade used for permanent submersion, so it suits coastal exposure, standing water and regular foot traffic.
- What's the difference between the 2700K and 3000K versions? Both use the same stainless steel body and eyelid lens. The only difference is colour temperature, 2700K gives a warmer glow and 3000K a slightly crisper white.
- How big does the cutout need to be? The cutout is 33mm across, small enough for tight spots between decking boards or in paving joints, with a fitting depth of 55mm.
