A small 350mA driver for small LED loads
The Collingwood PSIP3509W is a constant current LED driver built for the little jobs. It delivers a steady 350mA to whatever you wire it to, and it will run a load anywhere from 1W up to 9W. That is a deliberately modest capacity. Rather than trying to feed a whole run of fittings, this one is sized for a single ground light or a very small group, which keeps the driver close to the fitting and the cable runs short. It is sealed to IP65 and it is non dimmable, so it does one job and does it without fuss.
Black sealed plastic, slim enough to tuck away
The housing is a slim black plastic casing with a lightly ribbed top and a printed specification label on the face. It measures 149mm long, 37mm wide and just 24mm high, and it weighs around 0.2kg, so it hides easily inside a fitting void, a bollard base or a weatherproof enclosure. A round black cable enters at each end through a threaded compression gland, which is what gives the unit its IP65 seal. There is a small notched fixing lug at either end of the casing for screwing it down. Nothing about it is decorative, and it is not meant to be. It is a component that should disappear once the job is finished.
How It Works
Mains power at 220V to 240V goes in one end, and a regulated 350mA constant current output comes out the other at between 2.5V and 25V DC, adjusting itself to suit the LED load connected. Collingwood quotes 82% efficiency, a power factor above 0.9 and a maximum input current of 0.05A. Both the input and output tails are 0.2m of 1mm² two core round cable at 7mm diameter, so you are joining into your own supply and fitting cable rather than terminating into a screw block on the driver body. Built in protection covers short circuit, overload and overheating. The output is SELV, and the unit is double insulated to Class II, which means there is no earth connection to make. It arrives ready to wire, with no extra accessories needed.
Where It Works Best
This is a driver for outdoor and damp location work where the fitting itself is small. Think a single recessed ground light in a path or a driveway, a compact marker light, or a low output feature fitting in a garden wall. It gets mounted out of sight, in a fitting void, a below ground pot, an accessible ceiling or a weatherproof junction enclosure, then wired between the switched mains supply and the LED fitting it serves. Because it is IP65 it copes with dust and with water jets, so it can sit somewhere it will get wet rather than needing a dry cupboard. That same rating means it is also rated for bathroom zone 1, so it can be used on bathroom schemes as well. Our guide to bathroom lighting zones explains how those zones are set out. Keep it out of any circuit that needs to dim, and keep the total connected load inside the 1W to 9W window.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and makes its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked in LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to put fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products in front of the UK electrical wholesale trade. It also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, which puts it in the top 5% of all companies assessed worldwide for sustainability. That background shows in the accessories as much as the fittings, and a sealed driver like this one is a good example of it.
Good to Know
- Backed by a 5 year Collingwood warranty.
- Rated IP65, meaning fully protected against dust and against water jets from any direction. Suitable for outdoor and damp locations.
- Rated for bathroom zone 1.
- Class II double insulated with a SELV output, so no earth connection is required at the driver.
- Non dimmable. It will not work on a dimmer circuit or with a dimming control system, so use it only on plain on and off switching.
- Constant current 350mA output. Only connect LED fittings designed for a 350mA constant current supply, and keep the total load between 1W and 9W.
- Rated for ambient temperatures from -25°C up to +50°C.
- Housing is plastic. Wipe clean with a dry cloth if it is accessible, and keep the glands and cable entries clear of debris so the seal is not compromised.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What does the Collingwood PSIP3509W LED driver actually do?
The Collingwood PSIP3509W is a constant current LED power supply that converts a 220V to 240V mains input into a regulated 350mA DC output at 2.5V to 25V, powering LED fittings with a total load between 1W and 9W. It produces no light of its own and must be paired with a separate LED fitting.
Can the PSIP3509W be dimmed?
No. The Collingwood PSIP3509W is a non dimmable driver, so it is only suitable for standard on and off switching. Connecting it to a wall dimmer or a dimming control system will not dim the connected fitting and is not a supported use of the product.
Can a Collingwood PSIP3509W driver be installed outdoors?
Yes. The PSIP3509W is rated IP65, which means the housing is fully sealed against dust and protected against water jets from any direction, so it can be installed outdoors or in damp locations. Its cables enter through threaded compression glands at each end to maintain that seal.
How many fittings can one PSIP3509W run?
The Collingwood PSIP3509W supports a total connected load of 1W to 9W at 350mA, so the number of fittings depends entirely on their individual wattage. In practice it is sized for a single small fitting such as one ground light, or a very small group whose combined wattage stays under 9W.
What size is the Collingwood PSIP3509W and does it need an earth?
The PSIP3509W measures 149mm long by 37mm wide by 24mm high and weighs roughly 0.2kg. It is Class II double insulated, so no earth connection is made at the driver itself.
