A 350mA constant current driver you can actually dim
Plenty of LED drivers only deliver power. The Collingwood PSDIM350 does that and takes a dimming signal as well. It is a 25W constant current unit with a fixed 350mA output, and it responds to a 1-10V analogue control signal, so the fittings running from it can be taken smoothly up and down from a 1-10V dimmer or a building control system. A press to make retractive switch will dim it too, if a plate switch suits the job better than a rotary dial.
The casing and the connections
The PSDIM350 arrives as a slim white polycarbonate brick, rated UL94-V0 for flame retardance. It measures 22mm high, 123mm long and 79mm wide, and weighs around 100g, so it tucks into a ceiling void, a joinery cavity or an accessory box without taking up much room. The mains side and the LED side both land on screw terminals that accept cable from 0.5 up to 2.5mm², which keeps the wiring familiar for anyone used to standard lighting circuits. There is no DIN rail clip on this model, so it is meant to be laid in or fixed in place rather than snapped onto a rail.
How It Works
The driver accepts a mains input of 110 to 240V AC and turns it into a regulated 350mA constant current output. The output voltage floats between 2V and 74V depending on how much load is sitting on it. Input current stays at or below 0.25A, maximum input power is 30W, power factor is 0.95 and efficiency is above 80 per cent. The output is SELV and the unit is double insulated, making it a Class II product with no earth needed at the driver itself.
On capacity, Collingwood rates it for up to 18 fittings at 1W each, or 6 fittings at 3W each, on a 350mA circuit. It also suits the brand's recessed LED retail lighting range, and up to two RDSS or SQSS units. A 1 metre sync cable is supplied, which lets you link as many as ten PSDIM350 drivers to a single 1-10V dimmer so they all move together. A 4 metre sync cable is offered separately when the drivers need to sit further apart. Protection against short circuit, overload and overheating is built in.
Where It Works Best
This is a behind the scenes component, so it belongs wherever the light fittings are not. The usual homes for it are a ceiling void above a run of 350mA downlights, a plasterboard bulkhead, the back of a cabinet or a joinery plinth, or a services cupboard feeding a whole zone. Because it is IP20 it has to stay indoors and dry, or live inside a properly sealed enclosure if the fittings it powers are outside. Leave a little air around it wherever it goes, and keep the ambient temperature inside the -25°C to 50°C window Collingwood publishes.
The job it does most often is grouping. When a room has several 350mA fittings that all need to dim as one, running them from PSDIM350 drivers and joining those drivers with the sync cable keeps the whole zone stepping together on one 1-10V dimmer.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has been working with LED technology since 2002. The brand states that it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale trade. It also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, which places it in the top 5 per cent of companies assessed for sustainability worldwide.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 5 year Collingwood warranty.
- IP20 rated. That means protection against solid objects larger than 12mm, and no protection at all against water, so it is for indoor or enclosed dry positions only.
- Double insulated Class II with a SELV output, so no earth connection is required at the driver.
- Dims from a 1-10V analogue signal or a press to make retractive switch. It will not respond to a mains leading edge or trailing edge dimmer.
- The 350mA output is fixed. It cannot be switched to 500mA or 700mA, so every fitting on it needs to be a 350mA type.
- Up to ten drivers can share one 1-10V dimmer using the sync cable. The 1 metre cable is supplied and a 4 metre version is available separately.
- Add up the total wattage of your fittings first and leave some headroom under the 25W rating.
- Operating range is -25°C to 50°C ambient. Keep ventilation clear and wipe dust away occasionally. There are no user serviceable parts inside.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
How many fittings can the Collingwood PSDIM350 run?
The Collingwood PSDIM350 is rated to run up to 18 fittings of 1W each, or 6 fittings of 3W each, on a 350mA constant current circuit. It will also power up to two RDSS or SQSS units.
What kind of dimmer does the PSDIM350 need?
The PSDIM350 dims from a 1-10V analogue control signal or from a press to make retractive switch. It is not compatible with mains leading edge or trailing edge dimmers.
Can several PSDIM350 drivers be dimmed together?
Yes. Up to ten Collingwood PSDIM350 drivers can be linked to one 1-10V dimmer using the sync cable, and a 1 metre sync cable is supplied with each driver. A 4 metre sync cable is available separately when the drivers sit further apart.
Can the Collingwood PSDIM350 be used outdoors or in a bathroom?
No. The Collingwood PSDIM350 is IP20 rated, which gives no protection against water, so it must be installed indoors in a dry position or housed inside a suitably sealed weatherproof enclosure.
What size is the Collingwood PSDIM350 and how is it wired?
The Collingwood PSDIM350 measures 22mm high, 123mm long and 79mm wide and weighs about 100g. Both the mains input and the LED output use screw terminals that take cable from 0.5 up to 2.5mm².
