A sealed 700mA driver for Collingwood low voltage fittings
Plenty of Collingwood's smaller LED fittings will not take mains power directly. They want a constant current driver in front of them, and the PSIP70018W is the compact IP65 option in the 700mA family. It holds a steady 700mA and carries loads from 2W up to 18W, which covers a single fitting or a short run of them. The whole body is sealed, and that is the detail that counts once the driver has to live outside in a cabinet or a void rather than in a warm dry loft.
The 18W, 700mA version
This is the 18W member of the PSIP range. Output is 700mA constant current across a 2.5V to 25V DC window, with 18W as the ceiling. The casing is black plastic, ribbed down one flank, with the full spec printed on a flat panel on top so an installer can read the model number without unwiring anything. It measures 149mm long by 37mm wide by 24mm deep and weighs 0.2kg, so it tucks into a shallow space easily. Short leads of 0.2m come out of each end, 1mm² 2 core with a 7mm outer diameter, each one passing through its own screw down gland. It is non dimmable, so it belongs with fittings you are happy to run at one fixed output.
How It Works
Mains arrives on the brown and blue cores marked ACL and ACN, at 220V to 240V AC, 50Hz or 60Hz, drawing up to 0.1A. The driver converts that to a regulated 700mA DC supply and sends it out on the red and black cores marked V+ and V-. Because the output is SELV, the fitting at the far end sees a safe low voltage rather than mains. Short circuit, overload and overheating protection are built in, the power factor is better than 0.9 and Collingwood quotes efficiency at 83%. It arrives as one sealed unit with both leads already fitted, so the work on site is connecting each end and finding it a home.
Where It Works Best
This is a behind the scenes component rather than something anyone is meant to look at. It sits between the mains supply and Collingwood LED fittings that call for a 700mA feed, and Collingwood states the PSIP range was designed for its own products and suits outdoor use with the Landscape range. In practice that means garden schemes: ground lights, markers and spike lights fed from a weatherproof enclosure, a garden cabinet, a decking void or the base of a planter. The IP65 rating means dust tight and protected against low pressure water jets, so rain and a hose are not a problem, though it is not built for sitting under standing water. That same rating also allows bathroom work, where it can be sited in bathroom zone 1 provided the installation follows the regulations. Wherever it lands, leave it somewhere reachable, because a driver is the part most likely to need attention years later.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked in LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. It also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, which places it in the top 5% of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability. Accessories like this driver are designed alongside the fittings they power, which is why the output current and load window line up so neatly with the rest of the range.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 5 year warranty from Collingwood.
- IP65 rated, meaning fully protected against dust and against low pressure water jets from any direction. Suitable outdoors, but not for immersion.
- Class II with double insulation, so no earth connection is required at the driver.
- Non dimmable. If the circuit needs to be dimmed, a dimmable driver is required instead, as no external dimmer will work through this unit.
- Add up the total wattage of every fitting you plan to connect and keep it inside the 2W to 18W range before you order.
- Rated for ambient temperatures up to 50°C, so give it a little air rather than burying it in insulation.
- Short circuit, overload and overheating protection are built in.
- Care is simple: keep the gland seals tight, keep the enclosure clear of soil and leaf litter, and do not paint the casing.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What load can the Collingwood PSIP70018W drive?
The Collingwood PSIP70018W drives LED loads from 2W up to a maximum of 18W at a constant 700mA output current, across an output voltage range of 2.5V to 25V DC.
Can the PSIP70018W be dimmed?
No. The Collingwood PSIP70018W is a non dimmable LED driver, so anything wired to it runs at one fixed output. A dimmable driver is needed if the lighting has to be controlled by a dimmer switch or a dimming system.
Which fittings does the PSIP70018W suit?
The PSIP70018W suits LED fittings that call for a 700mA constant current supply and draw between 2W and 18W in total. Collingwood states the PSIP driver range was designed for its own product range and is suitable for outdoor use with its Landscape lighting.
Does the PSIP70018W need an earth connection?
No. The PSIP70018W is a Class II double insulated driver, so it takes only live and neutral at the input. The two input cores are brown for ACL and blue for ACN, while the output cores are red for V+ and black for V-.
How long are the cables on the Collingwood PSIP70018W?
Both the input and the output lead on the Collingwood PSIP70018W are 0.2m long, in 1mm² 2 core cable with a 7mm outer diameter, and each one leaves the body through its own sealed cable gland.
