An outdoor rated 350mA driver for the bigger runs
The Collingwood PSIP35018W is the power supply that sits behind a group of 350mA garden fittings. It delivers a steady 350mA at up to 18W, and because the whole unit is sealed to IP65 it can live out in the weather rather than needing to be hidden away indoors. It makes no light of its own. Its only job is to feed clean, regulated current to spike lights, ground lights and other 350mA fittings bought separately.
The 18W version, and what that range means
Collingwood builds two IP65 constant current drivers at 350mA and this is the larger of the pair. It works across an output window of roughly 25V to 50V DC, and that window is where the 9W to 18W figure on the label comes from. Load it with less than about 9W and the fittings can flicker or refuse to strike properly. Ask it for more than 18W and it simply will not carry the load. The body is a slim black plastic case with the specification printed straight onto the top face and a short lead sealed into each end, so it reads as a piece of kit meant to be buried in a wiring run rather than looked at.
How It Works
Mains at 220V to 240V AC goes in on the input lead, brown to live and blue to neutral. The driver converts that to a regulated 350mA constant current and sends it out on the second lead, red for positive and black for negative. Both leads are 0.2m of two core 1mm² cable, factory fitted through sealed glands, so there is nothing to open up and nothing to reseal on site. It is a Class II unit, double insulated with no earth, and the output side is SELV. Built in protection covers short circuit, overload and overheating. Only the driver itself is supplied. The fittings, any joints and any extension cable are separate items.
Where It Works Best
This is the driver you reach for once a scheme has grown past what a 9W unit can feed. A run of 350mA spike lights down a planted border, a line of ground lights across a driveway, a bank of small step lights on a terrace. Because it is sealed to IP65 it can sit in a garden inspection box, clip inside a soffit, fix into a loft above a run of fittings or go in a plant room, and it will shrug off dust and damp in all of those. Electricians usually site it close to the fittings so the output leg stays short, then take the mains side back to a switched, fused supply. That IP65 rating also puts it inside bathroom zone 1, so it can be used in a bathroom where the wiring regulations allow, and our guide to bathroom lighting zones sets out how those zones are measured.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has concentrated on LED technology specifically since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. It also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability. Drivers like this one are the quiet half of that catalogue, but they are the reason the fittings in front of them behave.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 5 year Collingwood warranty.
- IP65 rated, which means fully dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction. Suitable for outdoor and damp locations.
- Electrical Class II, so it is double insulated and needs no earth connection.
- Non dimmable. It will not respond to a mains dimmer, a 1 to 10V signal or DALI, and wiring a dimmer upstream of it can damage the driver.
- Constant current at 350mA. It is not interchangeable with a 700mA driver or with a 24V constant voltage driver.
- Keep the connected load between 9W and 18W. Running a constant current driver below its minimum load is one of the most common causes of flicker.
- Around 200g, with a factory sealed flying lead at each end for connection.
- IP65 covers dust and water jets but not immersion, so it should not be laid loose in standing water or buried directly in wet soil.
- No routine maintenance. Keep the case clear of soil and leaf litter so heat can escape, and wipe it dry rather than jet washing it.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What does the Collingwood PSIP35018W LED driver actually do?
The Collingwood PSIP35018W is an IP65 rated constant current LED driver that converts 220V to 240V AC mains into a regulated 350mA supply, with a maximum output of 18W. It produces no light on its own and has to be paired with separately supplied 350mA LED fittings such as spike lights or ground lights.
Can the PSIP35018W be dimmed?
No, the Collingwood PSIP35018W is a non dimmable driver, so it cannot be controlled by a mains dimmer, a 1 to 10V signal or a DALI system. All four of Collingwood's IP65 sealed constant current drivers are non dimmable, so an installation that needs dimming control has to use a dimmable driver or handle the dimming elsewhere in the circuit.
How many watts of LED will the PSIP35018W run?
The PSIP35018W supports a connected load of 9W to 18W at 350mA. That range comes from its output voltage window of roughly 25V to 50V DC, and it matters in both directions, because a load under 9W can cause flicker while a load over 18W is beyond what the driver can supply.
Can the PSIP35018W be installed outdoors?
Yes, the PSIP35018W is sealed to IP65, which means it is dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction, so it is suitable for outdoor and damp installations. IP65 does not extend to immersion, so it should be sited in a weatherproof enclosure, a garden inspection box or a sheltered void rather than left sitting in water.
What connections does the PSIP35018W come with?
The PSIP35018W is supplied with a factory fitted flying lead at each end, 0.2m of two core 1mm² cable on both the mains input and the LED output, each passing through a sealed cable gland. The input is brown for live and blue for neutral, the output is red for positive and black for negative, and because the driver is Class II no earth connection is required.
