The SL220 is Collingwood's compact garden spike light, and this is the bronze low voltage version of it. It is the sort of fitting you push into a border once and then stop noticing by day, until the tree above it lifts out of the dark every evening. The head is a short anodised aluminium cylinder that tilts through a full 90 degrees, from pointing straight up to sitting level with the ground, so you can aim it at a trunk, a wall or a specimen shrub and walk away. Inside the head sits a single LED paired with its own lens, which is how Collingwood keeps the body this small while still throwing a usable beam.

The bronze finish

Bronze is what you choose when you would rather the fitting did not read as hardware. It is a warm brown anodised finish over aluminium, matte rather than glossy, and it settles against bark, brick and dark mulch in a way that black never quite manages once the sun is up. A slim amber bezel rings the lens and is the only bright detail on the whole thing. It pairs naturally with weathered timber, red brick, sandstone, terracotta and copper rainwater goods. If your garden is full of black powder coated metalwork instead, the black SL220 is the closer match.

How It Works

This is a low voltage fitting, which means it does not connect to the mains. It runs from a separate constant current LED driver that is bought alongside it rather than built in. Feed it 350mA and it draws 2.2W. Feed it 700mA and it draws 4.6W. Collingwood quotes efficacy of up to 144 lumens per watt, so even the lower setting is brighter in the garden than the wattage suggests. Heads are wired in series back to the driver, so one driver can carry several spikes on a single run.

Each SL220 leaves the factory with its colour temperature and beam angle already set, so you pick those when you order. Colour temperature is 2700K, 3000K or 4000K, and the beam is either a narrow 12 degree or a wide 40 degree. Colour rendering is CRI 80. The fitting arrives with a 3m flying lead ready to join into your garden circuit, and it measures 62.5mm across the head with an overall height of 440mm, of which the lower 240mm is the spike itself. It weighs 0.6 kg. The LED is integrated and sealed into the head, so there is no lamp to change over its life.

Where It Works Best

Uplighting trees is the job this fitting was drawn for. Push one into the ground a short distance from the base of a trunk, tilt the head back and the bark texture does the rest. The narrow 12 degree beam is the one for tall, straight subjects such as birch, pleached hornbeam or a brick pier, because it keeps the light in a tight column rather than spilling it into next door's windows. The wide 40 degree beam suits multi stem specimens, box balls, low hedging and washing a garden wall or fence panel.

Beyond planting, they work well lining a driveway edge, marking the turn of a path, grazing a rendered garden wall or lifting a water feature. Because it is a spike rather than a fixed base, it wants soft ground it can be pressed into, and it can be lifted and repositioned as a border matures. Collingwood also lists the SL220 as coastal protected, which matters if you garden within reach of salt air. Warmer 2700K flatters brickwork and autumn colour, while 4000K gives evergreens and pale stone a crisper, more modern look.
