The smallest spike light Collingwood makes
The SL030 is built to disappear. The head is a plain tapered cone just 42mm across, so once the spike is pushed into a border the fitting reads as a point of light rather than a piece of hardware sitting in the planting. Behind the lens is a single high power LED with a 26 degree optic, which gives a tight controlled beam. That narrow angle is the reason people choose it. It lifts one specimen plant, one trunk or one section of fence, instead of spilling light across everything nearby.
Marine grade 316 stainless steel
The head and the long spike are both stainless steel 316, the grade specified for coastal and salt exposed work rather than the 304 used on a lot of budget garden lighting. Collingwood lists the SL030 as coastal protected on that basis. The finish is a bright silver with a light brushed grain on the cone and a smooth polish down the spike, which reads as quiet and functional against gravel, slate, timber and green planting. It sits happily alongside stainless or chrome ironmongery elsewhere in the garden, and it weathers to a soft grey rather than staining.
How It Works
This is a low voltage Class III fitting, so it runs from a separate LED driver. No driver is supplied with the light. How bright it gets depends on the current you feed it. At 350mA it draws 1W and produces 70 lumens in 2700K or 75 lumens in 3000K. Push it to 700mA and the same fitting draws 2W and produces 120 lumens in 2700K or 135 lumens in 3000K, so the brightness of the scheme is a decision you make at the driver rather than by buying a different light. The fittings wire in series, which keeps cabling simple when several run down one path. A 3m rubberised outdoor cable is fitted and sealed at the factory, and Collingwood's JB2, JB4 and JB6 waterproof connectors are the neat way to join or extend runs. The head swivels through 90 degrees, so you push the spike in first and aim afterwards.
Where It Works Best
Flower beds and shrub borders are the obvious home for it. The narrow beam is very good at picking out a single specimen, a clipped box ball or a piece of garden sculpture without washing the lawn behind it. Space a few along a path edge and you get soft pools at ground level instead of a runway. It also works pushed into a large terrace planter, or angled up at a rendered wall or fence panel for a graze of light up the surface. IP65 sealing means it is rated for permanent outdoor use in all weathers, and that rating sits well above the IP44 minimum for bathroom zone 1, so it can also be specified in a wet indoor area. If you are working out zones, our guide to bathroom lighting zones sets out the rules.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked in LED technology and nothing else since 2002. The brand states that it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. It has also been awarded an EcoVadis Gold medal, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability. The 7 year warranty on this spike light is a fair reflection of how long they expect it to last in the ground.
Good to Know
- 7 year warranty from Collingwood.
- IP65 rated. The 6 means completely sealed against dust, the 5 means protected against water jets from any direction, so rain, hose spray and irrigation are all covered.
- Class III low voltage. It must be powered from a separate LED driver, which is not included.
- Wired in series, so several fittings share one driver. Check the driver output covers the combined load before ordering.
- Dimming depends entirely on the driver you pair it with. The fitting itself sets no dimming protocol.
- CRI of 80, so foliage, brickwork and render read naturally rather than washed out.
- Rated LED life of 70,000 hours. The LED is integrated and cannot be replaced separately.
- Body 42mm diameter, overall height 473mm including the spike, weight 0.7kg.
- Care: rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasives and chlorine based cleaners on the stainless steel.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Does the Collingwood SL030 spike light need a separate driver?
Yes. The SL030 is a Class III low voltage fitting and no driver is supplied with it, so it must be powered from a separate LED driver running at either 350mA or 700mA.
How bright is the Collingwood SL030 spike light?
Output depends on the drive current and the colour temperature. At 350mA the SL030 draws 1W and produces 70 lumens in 2700K or 75 lumens in 3000K. At 700mA it draws 2W and produces 120 lumens in 2700K or 135 lumens in 3000K.
How wide is the beam on the SL030?
The SL030 has a 26 degree beam angle, a narrow spot intended for lighting individual plants, trunks and garden features rather than washing a wide area of ground.
Is the SL030 suitable for a coastal garden?
The casing and spike of the SL030 are made from marine grade 316 stainless steel, the grade normally specified for coastal and salt exposed installations, and Collingwood lists the fitting as coastal protected.
Can several SL030 spike lights run from one driver?
Yes. SL030 spike lights are wired in series, so a run of fittings can share a single LED driver as long as that driver output is rated for the combined load of every light on the circuit.
