Texture and Shadow, Facing Left
The Armstrong 6L in Dries Ribbon glass takes the same left facing, six globe sconce and gives it the most textural and characterful of Schwung's three glass finishes. Fine ribbing runs through each mouth blown globe, breaking the light into soft, shifting patterns rather than a flat glow, and because the ribbing forms slightly differently in every globe, no two of the six are quite identical.
In Dries Ribbon Glass
Dries Ribbon is a hand blown glass carrying a surface of fine, raised linear threads formed in the blowing process itself. Lit from within, the ribbing scatters and refracts the light, throwing soft, moving patterns onto nearby walls and ceilings that shift as the light dims or the room darkens. It's the most artisanal looking of the three Armstrong glass types, prized where the light itself, and the shadow it casts, is as much a part of the room as the fitting.
Choose Your Finish
The frame comes in lacquered burnished brass, polished nickel, or black gunmetal, all three carrying the same six Dries Ribbon globes. Given how much visual interest the glass already brings, a simpler, quieter frame finish such as black gunmetal can let the ribbing do the talking, while polished nickel adds a further layer of reflected light.
How It Works
Six 5W LED candelabra (E12) bulbs are included, one per globe, for a combined 30W and 2700K warm white light at around 3000 lumens. The fitting dims using a low voltage electronic or trailing edge dimmer. It measures approximately 139cm high, 35cm wide and 33cm deep, weighing around 5.8kg, and mounts flush to a ceiling or directly to a wall via a single circular backplate roughly 12cm across. No IP rating is specified, so keep it to dry indoor spaces.
Where It Works Best
The shifting, patterned light of Dries Ribbon glass suits rooms where atmosphere matters as much as illumination, a dining room, a living room, or a stairwell and landing where the play of light across plasterwork or a painted wall becomes part of the experience. Paired with the 6R it makes for a dramatic symmetrical feature; on its own, the left facing sweep still throws enough textured light to work as a room's primary source.
Made by Schwung
Schwung, founded in Namyslow, Poland in 2014 by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen, developed Dries Ribbon as the most hand crafted looking of its three signature glass types. According to Schwung, the variation between individual globes is intentional, a reminder that each one passed through a glassblower's hands rather than a mould.
Good to Know
- Made to order in Poland at Schwung's workshop
- Not returnable, as with all Schwung fittings, since each one is made to order
- Six hand blown Dries Ribbon glass globes (approximately 15cm diameter each, no two identically textured) on an angular brass frame, in this left facing orientation, pair with the 6R for a symmetrical installation
- Approximately 139cm high, 35cm wide and 33cm deep, weighing around 5.8kg
- Takes 6 x 5W LED candelabra (E12) bulbs, included, 2700K warm white, approximately 3000 lumens combined, dimmable with a low voltage electronic or trailing edge dimmer
- No IP rating specified, so best suited to dry indoor spaces rather than bathrooms
- Brass care: clean regularly with a soft cloth or duster, a damp cloth can also be used, dry the frame fully before switching back on, do not use cleaning agents on brass parts
- Glass care: clean the outside with a soft dry cloth, use a damp cloth first on dirtier glass, a gentle glass cleaner will lift grease
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician
Questions People Ask
Will the six globes all look identical?
Not exactly. Dries Ribbon is hand blown, so the fine ribbing on each globe varies slightly, which is part of the appeal rather than a flaw.
Can I use the 6L on its own without the 6R?
Yes, it's a complete fitting in its own right. Pairing it with the 6R simply creates a symmetrical installation across a wider wall.
Is it dimmable?
Yes, using a low voltage electronic or trailing edge dimmer.
