The UL030 SPS is a small, tough spotlight for the garden that does not mind getting wet. It sits on a square base plate and pivots a full 360 degrees on its stainless steel yoke, so you point it exactly where you want the light to land, up a tree trunk, along a wall, or straight down into a pond. It carries an IP68 rating and is rated submersible to 9 metres, which puts it in a different league from a standard spike light: this one can genuinely sit under water as part of a pond or water feature, not just survive rain.

The Brass Finish

This version is finished in brass rather than the stainless steel or black anodised aluminium options in the same range. Brass ages with a warm, slightly antique tone that suits period gardens, gravel paths, and planting schemes with copper or weathered stone nearby, somewhere a bright silver fitting would stand out for the wrong reasons. Up close the body has a machined, finned housing around the lens, with a brass hex bolt on the yoke for locking the angle once you have found the right spot.

How It Works

Inside is a single built in LED rated at 4.6W and driven at 700mA, or it can be stepped down to 350mA for a softer output. You choose the beam spread and colour temperature at the point of ordering: a tight 12 degree beam for throwing light a distance, such as up a tall tree, or a wider 40 degree spread for washing a broader area, in either 2700K or 3000K white light. Colour rendering is above 80 CRI, so foliage and stonework read true rather than flat. Because it is a low voltage, Class III fitting, it cannot be wired straight into the mains. It needs a compatible low voltage driver, and multiple UL030 units can be wired in series from a single driver rather than each needing its own. It arrives with 3 metres of cable and the wall and base fixings needed to fit it, and it will dim if paired with a suitable low voltage dimming driver. The LED itself is sealed in and not a replaceable lamp, so the beam angle and colour temperature chosen at purchase are fixed for the life of the fitting.

Where It Works Best

This is a fitting for outdoor, low voltage garden lighting schemes rather than anywhere near a mains socket. The narrower 12 degree beam suits uplighting a specimen tree, a statue, or a tall architectural feature from a distance. The 40 degree beam works well set low among planting or at the edge of a border, washing light across a wider spread of ground. Given the submersible rating, it is equally at home sat on the bed of a pond or under a fountain, aimed up through the water, which is a job most garden spotlights simply are not built for.
