This is Collingwood's Tilt Adjustable ground light in the larger 193mm cut out size, and the tilt is what sets it apart. Most recessed ground lights fire straight up and that is the end of it. This one lets you angle the lamp up to 25 degrees off vertical, so you can wash a wall, graze a tree trunk or throw light along a path instead of into the sky. It takes a static load of 2000kg and is rated for vehicles up to 15mph, so it can sit in the middle of a driveway rather than being kept safely to the edges.

The 316 stainless steel bezel

The part you see is a brushed 316 stainless steel trim ring, held down by three screws set into its face. 316 is the marine grade, which is why Collingwood lists this fitting as suitable for coastal sites where salt air makes short work of lesser metals. Below the bezel the body is anodised aluminium, deeply finned so it sheds heat into the surrounding ground. Stainless sits comfortably alongside grey granite setts, sawn sandstone, porcelain paving and resin bound gravel, and it reads as hardware rather than decoration, which is usually what you want underfoot. The whole fitting measures 210mm across and 195mm deep, and weighs 3.3 kg.

How It Works

It runs straight off the 230V mains. There is no remote driver to find a home for, which is one less box to bury or squeeze into a plant room. Inside, an integrated LED module gives 2300 lumens from 23W at 3000K, through a 34 degree beam, with a CRI of 80. A knob on the side of the body sets the tilt and the lamp stays at the angle you leave it. It arrives with a metre of cable already fitted and an installation tube for bedding into the ground. Wiring is parallel, so a run of them can sit on the same circuit. Choose the TRIAC version if you are dimming from a standard mains dimmer, or the DALI-2 version if the scheme is on a lighting control system.

Where It Works Best

Driveways are the obvious home for it, particularly a run marking out a turning circle or lighting the approach to a garage. The tilt earns its keep on hard landscaping where the thing you want lit is not directly overhead. Set into a patio a metre out from the house and angled back, it grazes brickwork or render without the fitting having to sit in a flowerbed. It also suits walk over paths, courtyards, the base of a specimen tree, and commercial forecourts and car park edges where a fitting has to survive being driven across. Being IP67 and fully sealed, it copes with standing water and with a soaked lawn edge. That sealing takes it far past the IP44 minimum used for bathrooms, so it is also suitable for bathroom use if a recessed floor fitting is what the room calls for.
