Most recessed ground lights fix their beam at the factory and leave you to design around it. This one does not. The Collingwood Tilt Adjustable ground light drops into a 165mm cut out, sits flush with the surface once installed, and keeps a small adjuster on the side of the housing so the beam can be tilted up to 25 degrees after the fitting is already in the ground. Get it in place, stand back, check the angle, then fine tune it. It also carries a 2000kg static load rating and is built for drive over traffic at up to 15mph, so parking a car on top of it is exactly what it was designed for.

316 stainless steel, wired straight to mains

What you actually see once it is installed is a 316 marine grade stainless steel bezel with a brushed finish, evenly spaced countersunk fixing screws around the rim. Below that sits an anodised aluminium body, a pairing Collingwood specifies for coastal locations where salt air is a factor. It reads as understated and cool toned rather than decorative, so it sits quietly into granite setts, sawn sandstone or porcelain paving. This particular version is wired straight to mains at 220 to 240V AC, which means no remote driver box to find space for, hide, or replace down the line.

How It Works

Inside is an integrated 18W LED module running at 3000K warm white with a colour rendering index above 80. Two beam angles are available on this listing. The 34 degree option throws a narrower, longer column of light, better suited to a tall tree or a two storey facade. The 60 degree option spreads wider and closer in, which works well over a low wall, a hedge or a broad shrub. Both use the same 18W module, so the choice comes down to how far the light needs to reach rather than how bright it runs.

The fitting arrives with 1 metre of H05RN-F rubber cable already wired in, 3 core at 1.0mm sq, plus an installation tube in the box to form the void before paving or concrete is laid over it. Wiring is parallel, and the fitting is electrical class 1, so it needs a proper earth connection. Dimming on this straight to mains version is TRIAC based, using a compatible rotary dimmer such as Collingwood's own DM298FP faceplate or DM298GRID grid module, both sold separately. A JB5 gel filled connector, also sold separately, is the sensible way to make any below ground joint properly waterproof.

Where It Works Best

Driveways are the obvious fit, since the drive over rating is what sets this apart from a standard walk over ground light. Set in a line down a gravel or block paved drive, these give ground level light with nothing sticking up to catch the eye by day. Away from driveways, use them to uplight a mature tree, wash light up a rendered facade, mark the edge of a terrace or graze a stone wall so the texture shows after dark. The 2000kg loading also makes them a realistic option for courtyards, car parks and commercial entrances, anywhere a lighter duty fitting would not survive regular vehicle traffic.
