Most recessed ground lights fire straight up and stay that way. This one does not. The head inside the Tilt Adjustable 147mm cut out ground light turns on a knob, letting you angle the beam by up to 25 degrees so it washes a wall, a tree trunk or a gate pier instead of the night sky. It is also built for real traffic. The fitting carries a 2000kg static load rating and is approved to be driven over at speeds up to 15mph, which is what makes it a genuine driveway light rather than a border light that happens to sit in the ground.

Once it is set into the ground, all you see is the bezel. It is 316 stainless steel, the marine grade, with a flat brushed face, a slim rim and small recessed fixing screws that keep the top surface clean to look at and easy to sweep over. Everything under the surface is anodised aluminium, finned to shed heat into the surrounding ground. Stainless is the quiet choice here. It reads as neutral against block paving, resin bound gravel, granite setts and porcelain, and it ties in with stainless door furniture, glass balustrade and modern render without drawing attention to itself.

How It Works

This is the straight to mains version, which means the control gear lives inside the fitting and there is no remote driver to find a dry home for. It arrives already wired with one metre of cable, ready to join onto your 230V supply, and the wiring is parallel so several lights run off the same circuit. It is a Class I fitting, so it needs an earth. The recess needs a 147mm cut out, with the body measuring 160mm across and 156mm deep, and the whole unit weighs 1.6kg.

You choose the optic and the control method together. The TRIAC mains dimmable build runs at 12W and comes with either a 34 degree beam for a tight column of light up a wall, or a 60 degree beam for a broader spread across paving. The DALI-2 build runs at 10W, gives 1000 lumens and comes with the 34 degree optic. Every version is 3000K warm white with a CRI of 80, and the tilt mechanism works the same way across all of them.

Where It Works Best

The obvious home is a driveway, set in a line along the edge or in pairs either side of the entrance, where the drive over rating earns its keep. It works just as well sunk into a front path, a patio or a terrace, and the tilt makes it useful for grazing light up the face of a house, a garden wall or a boundary fence. Commercial forecourts, hotel approaches and car park landscaping suit it too. The 316 stainless bezel and IP67 sealing mean coastal and exposed sites are fair game.
