The SL130 is the most discreet fitting in Collingwood's spike range. The head is only 42mm across, so it can sit down between shrubs and light what you actually want lit without becoming an object you notice. Total height is 408.5mm and 240mm of that is spike that goes under the surface, so only a short stem and a small barrel stand above the soil. If you have been hunting for a low voltage LED spike light that does its job quietly, this is the size to start with.

The bronze anodised finish

This version is bronze anodised aluminium. Anodising drives the colour into the surface of the metal rather than laying it over the top the way paint does, which matters on a fitting that will get clipped by a mower or a boot at some point in its life. The tone is a warm brown metallic. It reads much softer than black and settles quietly against brick, gravel, oak sleepers and bare winter beds. Up close there is a brass toned bezel ring around the lens that catches a little daylight and gives the head some definition. Collingwood also lists the SL130 as coastal protected, which is worth knowing if the garden sits within reach of salt air.

How It Works

This is a Class III fitting, so it never touches mains voltage. It runs from a separate LED driver, and the driver decides how hard the light is pushed. At 350mA it draws 1W. At 700mA it draws 2W. Output then follows the colour temperature you choose. Collingwood publishes 70 lumens at 350mA and 120 at 700mA for the 2700K version, 75 and 135 for 3000K, and 95 and 140 for 4000K. The beam is a narrow 26 degrees in every version, colour rendering is above 80 CRI, and the LEDs are binned to SDCM3 so a run of them looks consistent rather than patchy.

The fittings wire in series, so several can share one driver as long as the total load stays inside that driver's rating. Each light arrives with 3m of H05RN-F rubberised cable already attached, 6mm across, which is usually enough to reach a waterproof junction box without making a joint at the light itself. The head tilts through 90 degrees where it meets the stem, so the aiming happens after the spike is in the ground, and you can set it again a year later once the border has grown up around it.

Where It Works Best

A 26 degree beam is a pointing tool rather than a wash, so this one earns its place aimed at something specific. Push it in at the foot of a multi stem birch and run the light up through the branches. Set it back a hand span from a rendered or flint wall and let the beam graze across the texture. Aim one into a clipped box ball or an ornamental grass and the silhouette does the work for you. Along a path, a series of them reads as quiet markers rather than runway lighting. The 2700K and 3000K options give the mellow, low firelight glow most people want in a garden after dark, while 4000K is crisper and cleaner and tends to suit contemporary paving, water and architectural planting.
