A 150W outdoor driver that needs no box to hide in

The Collingwood PSIP15024 is a 150W 24V constant voltage LED driver sealed to IP67. Most power supplies this size have to live indoors or inside a weatherproof housing. This one does not. It can sit out in the rain, under decking or in a damp void, which is why it keeps turning up on garden and facade schemes where there is simply nowhere dry to put the electrics.

It is also a deliberately large supply rather than several small ones. Wired in parallel it will run up to 300 Collingwood GL018 ground lights from a single unit, so a long driveway or a whole terrace can come off one feed instead of a string of little drivers hidden down the run.

Steel and aluminium, built to disappear

Collingwood makes this one in steel and aluminium, a plain silver industrial case measuring 190mm long, 62mm wide and 37mm high, with a listed weight of about 1kg. There is no styling to it at all, because nobody is ever meant to look at it. The finned metal body is there to shed heat, and the sealed construction is what earns the IP67 figure. It pairs with Collingwood's 24V DC ranges, ground lights and 24V LED strip in particular, and with the PDCINT1-10V interface when a scheme needs dimming.

How It Works

Mains at 220V to 240V AC goes in and a regulated 24V DC supply comes out, rated at 150W with a maximum output of 6.3A. Maximum draw on the input side is 178W. Because it is constant voltage rather than constant current, fittings wire across the output in parallel and each one takes only what it needs, so you size the driver by adding up the loads rather than by counting circuits.

Power factor correction is built in at 0.95, and short circuit, overload and overheating protection sit inside the case.

One thing worth being clear about. As supplied, the output is fixed and the driver will not dim. To get 1-10V dimming you wire Collingwood's separate PDCINT1-10V interface into the circuit, and the driver then follows a 1-10V control signal from a compatible dimmer or control system. That interface is bought separately. There is no DIN rail mounting and this is not a plug and play unit, so it is wired in on site.

Where It Works Best

This is the driver you reach for when the electrics end up outside with the lights. Ground light runs across a driveway or a terrace, uplighters set into planting beds, step and deck lighting, low level path marking, facade grazing on a garden wall. All the situations where a 24V feed has to be pulled a long way and there is no cupboard to hide a driver in.

It is equally at home in the unglamorous places. Plant rooms, garages, unheated outbuildings, service voids and crawl spaces all suit it, because the sealed case shrugs off dust and damp that would kill an IP20 driver. Because it is rated to IP67 it can also be used on bathroom installations, including within the zoned areas where an unsealed driver would not be permitted. Give it room to breathe wherever it lands. It is a sealed metal case with no fan, so it sheds heat through its own body and should not be buried in insulation or packed tight against other gear.
