A Full Ring of Eighteen, Cast in Ribboned Glass
The Zodiac 18 is built as a complete circle rather than a cluster. Eighteen brass arms radiate from a central hub, each holding a single globe, forming a wide ring that hangs close to the ceiling. Schwung refers to the shifting views this creates as you walk around the fitting as a carousel effect, and in Dries Ribbon glass, with its fine drawn threads running through each globe, that shift is more dramatic still, since the light fractures differently through every ribbon pattern.
In Dries Ribbon Glass
Dries Ribbon is the most intricate of Schwung's three glass types, made by drawing fine threads of glass through the globe as it's mouth blown, so the light passing through breaks into delicate, uneven shadows rather than a flat glow. Multiplied across eighteen globes in a ring, the effect is a chandelier that looks different depending on where you stand beneath it, closer to a piece of glasswork than a conventional light fitting.
Choose Your Finish
The Zodiac 18 Light in Dries Ribbon glass is available with a Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass, or Polished Nickel frame.
How It Works
Each of the eighteen arms carries a 5W E14 LED bulb, included, on a 230V supply. Dimming is only supported with electronic (trailing edge) dimmers, not standard leading edge switches. The fitting is rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms rather than bathrooms. It spans 131.4cm in diameter with a minimum drop of 62.4cm, and Schwung supplies extension rods so it can be hung lower where the ceiling allows.
Where It Works Best
Because the Dries Ribbon glass throws such an intricate pattern of light and shadow, the Zodiac 18 works best in a room with the height and space to let that pattern spread, a grand dining room, a large hallway, or a hotel or restaurant space where the fitting can act as the room's main visual focus rather than one of several light sources.
Made by Schwung
Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. Every fitting is made to order in solid brass and mouth blown glass at the Namyslow workshop, and Dries Ribbon is, according to Schwung, the most demanding of their three glass types to produce consistently across eighteen matching globes. The result is a ring of light that Schwung designs to look different from every angle in the room.
