Schwung Vesta Legion Large Flush/Wall Sconce Light

A Monumental Column of Brass and Light

The Schwung Vesta Legion Large Flush/Wall Sconce is eight fluted brass columns gathered into one tall, stepped mass, with a small opal globe glowing from both ends of each column. Lit, it reads as sixteen points of warm light climbing the wall; unlit, it is a piece of brass sculpture. It can be fixed to a wall or flat to a ceiling. It is also a very large fitting. The Legion Large stands 1404mm tall, 157mm wide and weighs 12.5kg, so it needs a wall with real height and a fixing that can carry the weight. Please check both before ordering.

Choose Your Finish

The Legion Large is made in seven Schwung finishes, all applied by hand to solid brass:

• Lacquered Burnished Brass, a warm, lightly aged brass sealed under lacquer
• Black Gunmetal, a deep charcoal black
• Classic Bronze, a dark mottled bronze patina
• Heritage Bronze, a deeper, warmer bronze patina
• Verdigris Ash, a weathered blue green copper patina over dark brass, as shown in the photographs
• Rose Ash, a soft pinkish patina with darker undertones
• Shadowed Gild, a smoky, shadowed gold

Verdigris Ash, Rose Ash, Shadowed Gild and both bronzes are living patinas: the exact colour, the mottling and the way it catches the ribbing of the columns differ from piece to piece and from any photograph or screen. If you are matching to other finishes in the room, please call us before ordering.

How It Works

Sixteen Globes on Eight Columns

Each of the eight fluted columns is a tube with a lamp at both ends, so light escapes upwards and downwards and the wall around the fitting is washed from above and below. Sixteen 4 to 5W E14 LED G45 globe bulbs are supplied, together giving around 3520 lumens at a warm 2200K to 3000K. The E14 sockets accept replacement lamps up to 10W each, with G45 the maximum bulb size. The fitting is dimmable with a compatible dimmer, and Schwung specifies suitable types in the instruction manual.

Wall or Ceiling

The columns are fixed to a long rounded backplate 15mm deep, and the whole fitting projects 107mm from the surface it is mounted on. The same fitting can be installed vertically on a wall or flat against a ceiling, where it becomes a long linear flush light.

We recommend that this fitting is installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

This is a statement piece for a tall wall: a double height hallway, the landing of a grand staircase, a hotel lobby or a restaurant wall where it can be seen from across the room. Schwung photographs it on bare concrete and on rough plaster beneath timber beams, and the fluted brass works against both. In a more domestic setting it needs at least a full storey of clear wall; where space is tighter, the Vesta Legion Medium offers the same idea at 1074mm with six columns.

Made By Schwung

The Vesta collection takes its name from the Roman goddess of the hearth, and the Legion is its largest expression: a formation of columns standing together. Schwung was founded by Rudi Nijssen, a former antiques dealer, and Dominique Sente, a former goldsmith, and the brand makes all of its lighting in solid brass in its own workshop in Poland, with every patina applied by hand.

Questions People Ask

How big and heavy is the Vesta Legion Large?
It is 1404mm tall, 157mm wide and projects 107mm from the wall or ceiling, and it weighs 12.5kg. It needs a tall clear wall and a fixing into solid structure that can carry that weight.

Can it be fitted to a ceiling as well as a wall?
Yes. Schwung lists the Legion as a wall sconce or flush mount, so the same fitting can be installed vertically on a wall or flat against a ceiling.

How many bulbs does it use and are they included?
Sixteen E14 G45 globe bulbs, one at each end of the eight columns. All sixteen are supplied as 4 to 5W LEDs and can be replaced with E14 lamps up to 10W.

Will the Verdigris Ash finish look like the photographs?
Broadly, yes, but not exactly. Verdigris Ash is a hand applied patina, so the balance of green, blue and dark brass varies from piece to piece and will also look different on different screens. Please call us if you would like to discuss the finish before ordering.

Is it dimmable?
Yes, with a compatible dimmer. Schwung lists suitable dimmer types in the instruction manual.

Who should install it?
Given its weight and the sixteen lamps, we recommend that the Vesta Legion Large is installed by a qualified electrician.
