Threaded Glass, Cast in Shadow
Nineteen glass spheres in two sizes gather around a brass frame in the same effervescent, cloud like formation as the rest of the Nova range. In Dries Ribbon glass, though, the effect is entirely different, fine drawn threads run through each globe, catching the light and casting intricate, overlapping shadows across the ceiling and walls rather than diffusing it evenly. It's the most characterful and visually complex of the three Nova 19 glass options.
Dries Ribbon Glass, Three Frame Finishes
Dries Ribbon is Schwung's most artisanal signature glass, its transparent body threaded with fine internal lines that refract light into detailed, moving shadow patterns rather than a flat glow. The frame comes in Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass or Polished Nickel, so the metal tone can be matched to the room. Because each globe is mouth blown and threaded by hand, the exact pattern varies slightly from one to the next.
How It Works
The Nova 19 takes 19 x 5W LED bulbs (E14/E12 base, included), together producing 8,550 to 9,500 lumens at 3000K. It's dimmable, but only with electronic ELV or trailing edge dimmers. The fitting is rated IP20, so it's intended for dry indoor rooms rather than bathrooms. The chandelier is 688mm in diameter, with rods supplied to set the drop between 630mm and 1530mm on a fixed ceiling (732mm to 1632mm on a vaulted one), and weighs 20kg. All rods and bulbs are included in the box.
Where It Works Best
Because the shadow pattern only really reveals itself once the chandelier is lit and in place, this is a fitting best suited to a room where it will be seen switched on after dark as much as during the day, a dining room, a stairwell, or an entrance hall with height to spare. It's a choice for spaces where the fitting is expected to be the main event, not a background piece.
Made by Schwung
Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. According to Schwung, the Dries Ribbon technique involves drawing fine threads of glass into the body of each globe while it's still molten, which is why the brand describes it as the most labour intensive of its three signature finishes.
