There is something quietly extraordinary about a light that carries a story before it even enters your home. The Mullan Kirhii Pendant in Matte White Striped is one of those pieces. Handmade in the ceramic studio at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, every shade begins as raw clay shaped by hand, painted individually, and fired in the on-site kiln. The result is a finish that is at once crisp and deeply characterful — the matte white ground threaded with fine striped detailing that catches the light differently at every hour of the day.
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who saw potential in a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village and transformed it into one of Ireland's most celebrated lighting studios. The village itself takes its name from the Irish word muileann, meaning mill, so the heritage runs deeper than most. Today the studio employs over 100 craftspeople and exports to more than 55 countries, with installations in iconic venues including the Titanic Hotel Belfast, Adare Manor and Cafe en Seine in Dublin. Every ceramic piece is made to order, taking approximately three weeks from commission to delivery.
The Kirhii pendant works beautifully above a kitchen island or dining table, where functional lighting meets considered design. It is equally at home in a living room, a bedroom or a hallway where one well chosen piece can transform the entire feel of a space. The open upward facing shade disperses light generously while the ceramic body itself acts as a sculptural element even when unlit.
Available with a choice of antique brass, antique silver, matte black, polished brass or satin brass fittings to complement the metal tones already present in your interior. Because each shade is moulded and painted entirely by hand, no two are ever identical. The matte white striped finish draws inspiration from the colours and textures of the old stone buildings and surrounding landscape of Mullan Village, elevating this from a simple ceiling light into something with genuine provenance and lasting character. Made using sustainable clay and recycled brass components, this is handmade Irish ceramic lighting built to last a lifetime.
