Where can I position this?
Anywhere on a flat surface where you want localized light, as long as it's away from water or heavy steam. The mains cable needs to reach an outlet without creating a trip hazard.

Will this get very hot?
The glass and metal can warm during use, especially with higher wattage bulbs, so avoid placing it where children might touch the shade. A 10W LED bulb will run much cooler than a traditional halogen of the same wattage.
