A Copper Spotlight Built for the Outdoors
The WL220 is a compact, adjustable wall light that wires straight to the mains, with no separate transformer or driver box to hide anywhere. It throws a defined beam rather than a soft wash, so it earns its keep lighting one specific spot: a step, a house number, a run of brickwork. This version is made in solid copper, a finish that reacts to weather rather than resisting it.
Solid Copper That Ages With the Building
Copper does not stay bright outdoors for long, and that is the point. Rain and air darken it gradually into browns and eventually a soft green, so the fitting looks different in year three than it did on day one. It suits period brick and stone particularly well, and pairs naturally with copper guttering, downpipes or house numbers where those already exist. Anyone after a fitting that settles into a facade rather than standing out against it will get on well with this one.
How It Works
Inside the cylindrical head sits a 5.7W integral LED rated at 515 lumens in a warm 2700K colour temperature, working out at roughly 90 lumens per watt. Its colour rendering index of 80 is enough to show true colour on brick, render or planting. There is no separate driver to fit, the light wires straight to a standard mains supply, and its parallel wiring means an electrician can run several WL220 fittings from the same circuit. The head tilts 90 degrees and rotates 360 degrees on its base, so once it is fixed to the wall you can still angle the 40 degree beam up, down or across afterwards.
Where It Works Best
This is an exterior fitting through and through. It suits either side of a front door, along a boundary wall, at the foot of a garage, or wall mounted above steps where a tight, angled beam is more useful than broad ambient light. Because it is IP65 rated, it also holds up in a covered outdoor kitchen or under a porch roof exposed to driving rain. As IP65 exceeds IP44, it is also rated for bathroom zone 2, so the same fitting works indoors as a splashproof spotlight in a shower room if the space calls for it. Moonlight Design's guide to bathroom lighting zones explains what each zone allows.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and builds its LED fittings from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has worked specifically with LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life, mains dimmable LED lighting to the UK's electrical wholesale trade, though this particular WL220 is a fixed output fitting rather than a dimmable one. Collingwood has also been awarded an EcoVadis Gold medal, a rating that places it in the top 5 percent of companies EcoVadis assessed worldwide for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 7 year warranty from Collingwood.
- Rated IP65: fully dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction, suiting fully exposed outdoor walls as well as bathroom zone 2.
- Class I electrical construction, meaning it must be connected to earth as part of installation.
- This fitting is not dimmable.
- Colour rendering index of 80, at a fixed warm 2700K colour temperature.
- Wired in parallel, allowing multiple WL220 fittings to run from a single circuit.
- Clean with a soft dry cloth only. Scrubbing or polishing will slow or reverse the copper's natural patina.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Is the WL220 copper wall light dimmable? No, this fitting is not dimmable and runs at a fixed 515 lumen output.
Will the copper finish stay bright, or will it change colour over time? Solid copper left outdoors will darken and develop a patina from exposure to rain and air, so the finish is expected to change gradually rather than stay polished.
Can this wall light be used in a bathroom? Yes, its IP65 rating covers bathroom zone 2, so it can be fitted in a shower room or bathroom as well as outdoors.
Does it need a separate driver or transformer? No, the WL220 has an integral LED driver and connects straight to a standard mains supply.
What colour temperature does this light produce? This version of the WL220 produces a warm 2700K white light, similar in tone to a traditional filament bulb.
