A Compact Black Spotlight Built To Work On A Wall Or Underwater
The UL010 is one of Collingwood's smallest universal fittings, a lens fronted spotlight barely bigger than the palm of your hand that still carries an IP68 rating and a submersible depth of 9 metres. Point it at a tree, a wall or a piece of planting, or drop it straight into a pond, and it keeps working either way. Once it is fixed down the head tilts and rotates through a full 360 degrees, so you aim the beam exactly where you want it rather than settling for wherever the fitting happens to point.
The Black Finish
This version is finished in black over a body of marine grade 316 stainless steel, the same corrosion resistant metal used across the whole UL010 range. The black coating gives it a low profile look that sits quietly against dark render, black fencing or planting shadows during the day, rather than catching the eye the way a bright metal finish would. If black is not right for your scheme, Collingwood also makes the UL010 in a natural stainless steel and in a brass finish, both listed separately.
How It Works
Inside the lens housing sits a small integrated LED module rated at 3W and driven at 700mA, producing around 90 lumens through a tight 26 degree beam at 80 CRI, in your choice of 2700K or 3000K warm white. The LED itself is not replaceable, so the fitting is built as a sealed, long life unit rather than something you relamp. It runs on low voltage, wired in series to a separately sold driver rather than a built in transformer, and it will dim as long as that driver is a dimmable one. Each fitting arrives with 3 metres of cable already attached and a set of wall fixings, and the square base plate is predrilled so it can be screwed to a wall, a post or a paving slab. The same IP68 rating that lets it sit underwater also makes it more than capable in a bathroom, including the wettest zones. If you are weighing it up for that instead of a garden, our guide to bathroom lighting zones explains what each zone allows.
Where It Works Best
This is a garden and outdoor light first. Use it as an uplighter under a tree or against a wall, stake it into a border to wash a bed of planting, or submerge it in a pond or water feature to light the water itself from below. It also suits coastal properties, since the 316 stainless body underneath the black finish is built to withstand salt air rather than just rain. Because a single UL010 can go on a wall, in a border or fully underwater, it works well as a way to keep one consistent black fitting running through several different zones of the same garden.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has focused on LED technology since 2002. The brand says it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market, and that same focus on sealed, weatherproof construction is exactly what shows up in an outdoor fitting like this one. Collingwood has also been awarded an EcoVadis Gold medal, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Measures 90mm high by 65mm wide by 65mm deep, and weighs 0.5kg.
- Covered by Collingwood's 7 year warranty.
- Rated IP68 and submersible to a depth of 9 metres, so it is protected against dust and continuous immersion, not just rain or splashing.
- Class III (SELV) fitting, run at low voltage through a separately sold driver rather than mains wiring.
- Dimmable only when paired with a suitable dimmable low voltage driver, a standard non dimmable driver will run it at fixed output.
- Wired in series, so check how many fittings your chosen driver can support before combining several UL010s on one circuit.
- Integrated LED module is not user replaceable, the fitting is designed to be sealed rather than relamped.
- Wipe the lens and body clean with a soft damp cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners on the black finish.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Can the black Collingwood UL010 really stay underwater all the time?
Yes, it is IP68 rated and submersible to a depth of 9 metres, so it is designed to sit fully underwater in a pond or water feature on an ongoing basis, not just cope with the occasional splash.
Does this light come with a driver included?
No, the driver is sold separately. The UL010 is a low voltage fitting wired in series to a driver, so you need one rated for the number of fittings and total wattage on that circuit.
What beam angle and colour temperature does the black UL010 give?
It produces a 26 degree beam at 80 CRI, and this black version is available in either 2700K or 3000K warm white.
Is the black UL010 the same fitting as the stainless steel or brass versions?
Yes, all three finishes share the same 316 stainless steel body and internal LED engine, only the applied black, natural stainless or brass finish changes, so performance is identical across the range.
Will the black UL010 dim?
It will dim, but only when it is wired to a driver that specifically supports dimming, on a standard non dimmable low voltage driver it will run at a fixed output.
