Two Beams From One Spike

Most garden spike lights give you a single beam and a single job. The SL230 Twin Pole gives you two. It carries a pair of separate spotlight heads on one tall stem, fed by one leader cable, so a single hole in the border and a single cable run buys you two beams that aim in completely different directions. Each head tilts through 90 degrees and swings 330 degrees around the pole, so you can send one beam up into a tree and drop the other across the path beneath it from the same fitting.

Collingwood builds it from two of its SL220 spotlight heads, which is why the beam quality is the same as the single head version, just doubled.

The Stainless Steel Finish

This is the stainless steel version. The stem has a fine brushed grain running along its length, and each head barrel is finished the same way with a brighter polished bezel ring holding the lens. The result reads as light silver rather than mirror bright, so it catches daylight without glaring. Collingwood specifies coastal protection on this fitting, which is the reason it turns up so often in gardens near the sea. The cool silver tone sits naturally beside grey stone, smooth render, galvanised planters and modern aluminium framed glazing. If you would rather the fitting vanished into the planting, the same model is made in black and in bronze.

How It Works

Both heads use integrated LEDs, so there is no lamp to buy and none to change. Drive current sets the output. At 350mA each head draws 4.4W, and at 700mA it draws 9.2W. Collingwood quotes 580 lumens at the lower current, rising to 1030 lumens at the higher one, through a tight 40 degree beam with a colour rendering index of 80. You pick the colour temperature when you order: 2700K for a soft amber wash, 3000K for a warm neutral white, or 4000K for a crisper, cooler light.

This is a low voltage Class III fitting, so it does not wire to the mains on its own. It needs a separate LED driver, and the heads are wired in series, which means the driver has to be sized for every head on the run rather than for one fitting at a time. Dimming is possible, but only if the driver you pair it with is a dimmable one. The spike pushes into soft ground and the fitting stands 845mm tall overall, with head barrels 62.5mm across and a total weight of 3.3 kg.

Where It Works Best

A driveway or a long garden path is where this fitting really earns its place. One row of spikes can wash the walking surface and lift the planting behind it at the same time, which is work that would otherwise take two separate runs of fittings. Set a pair either side of a gate or a front door and you get a symmetrical welcome without cluttering the ground with hardware.

It is also a good answer for a specimen tree or a piece of topiary sitting in a bed. Aim one head at the trunk and the other into the canopy and you build depth into the shape instead of flattening it. In a courtyard or a small terraced garden, where every fitting has to justify itself, one twin head spike can cover a wall panel and a seating area from a single position. Because the spike simply pushes into the soil, it is easy to lift and reposition as a border fills out over the seasons.
