Two Beams, One Cable, One Fixing Point

The Collingwood SL230 is a twin head spike light: two adjustable heads sharing a single slim pole that pushes straight into the soil. Each head tilts through 90 degrees and rotates through 330 degrees on its own swivel joint, so one cable run and one fixing point give you two completely separate 40 degree beams. That is the point of it. Most garden spike lights give you one beam for every cable you bury. This one gives you two, which halves the trenching on a path or a border scheme.

The Bronze Anodised Finish

This version is bronze anodised aluminium, a warm brown with a soft metallic sheen rather than a glossy painted coat. Anodising colours the metal itself instead of sitting on top of it, so there is no paint film to chip or flake when planting brushes against the pole. In daylight it recedes into bark, brick, gravel and dark soil, which is usually exactly what you want from a garden fitting you would rather not notice until dusk. Collingwood lists the SL230 as suitable for coastal areas, so salt laden air is not an issue. If you want to tighten the glare control, the GH220Z tapered hood and the GS220Z cylindrical snoot are available separately in matching bronze.

How It Works

This is the low voltage version of the SL230, so it runs from a separate LED driver rather than straight off the mains. Output follows the drive current. At 350mA the fitting draws 4.4W and produces 580 lumens in 2700K or 600 lumens in 3000K across the two heads. At 700mA it draws 9.2W and runs at an efficacy of around 111 to 112 lumens per watt, which lifts the output well above the 350mA figures. The heads wire in series, and Collingwood's own driver tables allow two to three SL230 fittings on a PSIP70036W, one to three on a DRV150700, or one to two on the dimmable DRV350700TD. A 3m H05RN-F rubberised flying lead of 6mm outside diameter comes attached, ready to join into a garden circuit through a gel filled waterproof connector or a JB series junction box. The LED is integrated, so there is no lamp to buy and none to replace.

Where It Works Best

Paths and driveways are the obvious job. Space them along the edge, angle one head down onto the surface and the other up into the planting behind, and a single fitting does two things at once. It is also very good at the top of garden steps, where two beams arriving from different directions wash the treads and take the hard shadows out of the nosings. In a border it will pick out a pair of specimen shrubs, or send one beam up through a small tree while the other grazes a wall. The 40 degree beam is a controlled pool rather than a flood, so think features and routes rather than lighting a whole lawn. And because it is spiked rather than bolted down, you can pull it up and move it as the planting fills in.
