Two beams, one spike, one cable run

The Collingwood SL230 puts two separate LED spot heads on a single slim pole, so one hole in the ground and one cable run do the work of two fittings. Each head aims on its own. That means you can wash a tree canopy with one and drop light onto the path beside it with the other. At 845mm to the top of the pole it sits above low planting rather than getting swallowed by it, and the twin head arrangement keeps light where you want it without a second trench across the lawn.

Black anodised aluminium, low voltage

This is the black low voltage SL230, product reference SL230BWBX. The body is anodised aluminium rather than painted, so the colour is part of the metal itself and copes far better with a knock from a mower or a stray boot than a sprayed coating would. It is a deep satin black, not a gloss, which is exactly what you want outdoors. It stops the fitting flaring in daylight and lets the pole disappear into hedging, dark mulch or a slate chipping border once the sun goes down. Collingwood lists the SL230 as suitable for coastal areas, so salt laden air is not a problem. It sits happily alongside other dark garden hardware such as black railings, charcoal fencing and dark grey porcelain paving.

How It Works

The SL230 is a low voltage SELV fitting, so it does not connect to the mains directly. It runs from a separate constant current LED driver, which is not included and needs to be chosen to suit the number of fittings on the run. At 350mA each head draws 4.4W and Collingwood publishes 580 lumens per head at that setting. Step the driver up to 700mA and each head draws 9.2W for a noticeably brighter result. Fittings wire in series, and Collingwood names the DRV150700, the dimmable DRV350700TD and the PSIP70036W among its recommended drivers. Each unit comes as the spiked pole with the twin head assembly fitted and a 3m H05RN-F rubberised flying lead of 6mm outside diameter. Both heads tilt through 90 degrees and rotate through 330 degrees independently, and each throws a 40 degree spot beam. Colour temperature is fixed per unit, so you choose 2700K, 3000K or 4000K at the point of order. Installing it is a case of pushing the spike into soft ground, aiming the heads, then joining the tail to your buried supply cable with a waterproof connector.

Where It Works Best

Path edges are the obvious home for it. One head lights the walking surface while the other picks out the planting, so a single line of SL230s does two jobs down the length of a garden path. It earns its keep on steps and level changes too, where the second head can be angled back to catch the riser. Set among shrubs it will graze a fence panel and uplight a small multi stem tree at the same time. Along a driveway it marks the edge without the runway effect you get from a row of bollards. Because the whole fitting is on a spike it is just as happy in a large planter or a raised bed as it is in a border, and being low voltage it is a sensible choice for a garden that gets used after dark by children and pets.
