A 100W outdoor driver that does not need a cupboard
The Collingwood PSDIP10024 is a 100W 24V LED driver rated IP66, which means it can sit outside in the weather instead of needing a dry space indoors. That is really the whole point of it. On plenty of garden lighting jobs there is nowhere sensible inside the house to hide the gear, and this is the answer. It is also 1-10V dimmable, so a run of 24V fittings can be brought up and down smoothly from a compatible controller rather than being stuck on full output.
Black finned metal case
The body is a black metal extrusion in steel and aluminium, ridged along its full length so heat passes straight out into the surrounding air. A flat fixing flange sits at each end with screw holes through it, so the unit bolts down onto a wall, a post or a backing board inside an enclosure. Short flying leads emerge from each end, mains in at one, output and dimming signal at the other. The case measures 230mm long, 68mm wide and 44mm high. It pairs with 24V constant voltage loads, so Collingwood's 24V garden and facade fittings, or 24V LED strip and similar gear, up to 100W in total.
How It Works
This is a constant voltage driver. It takes a 220 to 240V AC mains supply and converts it to a steady 24V DC output, rated at 4.15A and 100W maximum. Dimming runs on its own separate 1-10V control pair, which takes a signal from a 1-10V dimmer or control module rather than from the mains side, so a normal dimmer switch on the supply will not do anything. Power factor correction is built into the unit and gives a power factor of 0.98, and the driver protects itself against short circuit, overload and overheating. Three flying leads come fitted, each 0.25m long: a three core 1mm² mains input, a two core 1.5mm² 24V output, and a two core 0.75mm² lead for the 1-10V signal. Extend those inside a suitably rated weatherproof junction box.
Where It Works Best
Reach for this driver when the fittings are outdoors and the gear has to be as well. A bank of 24V spike spots down a garden path, a row of grazing lights up a boundary wall, soffit or facade lighting across the front of a house, or 24V strip tucked into a pergola or a decking edge. Mounting it close to the fittings it feeds, rather than at the far end of a long run, keeps voltage drop on the 24V side sensible. Indoors it is equally at home in a plant room, a garage, a loft or a service void where dust and damp would bother an ordinary driver. Because the enclosure is IP66, it can also be installed inside a bathroom, including the wetter areas, though it is worth reading up on bathroom lighting zones before deciding where it goes.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has concentrated on LED technology since 2002, which is early for a British lighting manufacturer. The brand states it was among the first to put fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products in front of the UK electrical wholesale trade. Collingwood has also been awarded an EcoVadis Gold medal, placing it in the top 5% of all companies EcoVadis assesses worldwide for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Rated IP66, which means the case is dust tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction, so it can be mounted in a fully exposed outdoor position.
- Output is 24V DC constant voltage, 100W maximum at up to 4.15A. Total the wattage of every fitting on the circuit and leave some headroom rather than running it right at the limit.
- Dimming is 1-10V only. It needs a compatible 1-10V dimmer or controller wired to the control leads, and it will not respond to a leading edge or trailing edge mains dimmer.
- Listed by Collingwood as Class I, so the earth core in the three core mains input lead must be connected.
- Maximum ambient temperature is 40°C. Leave the finned case room to breathe and never bury it in insulation.
- Steel and aluminium construction, covered by a 3 year Collingwood warranty.
- Care is simple. Brush dust and garden debris out of the fins now and then so the case can still shed heat properly.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
How much lighting can the Collingwood PSDIP10024 run?
The Collingwood PSDIP10024 is a 100W LED driver with a 24V DC constant voltage output rated at up to 4.15A, so the combined wattage of all the fittings connected to it must stay at or below 100W.
Can the PSDIP10024 be mounted outside?
Yes. The PSDIP10024 is rated IP66, meaning it is dust tight and protected against powerful water jets, so it is built to be fixed outdoors without any additional weatherproof enclosure around it.
What sort of dimmer does the PSDIP10024 need?
The PSDIP10024 dims on a 1-10V control signal, so it requires a 1-10V dimmer or control module wired to its dedicated 1-10V leads. A conventional dimmer switch fitted on the 230V mains supply will not dim it.
What size is the Collingwood PSDIP10024 driver?
The Collingwood PSDIP10024 body measures 230mm long by 68mm wide by 44mm high, with a flat fixing flange at each end for screwing it to a wall, post or backing board.
Does the PSDIP10024 come with cables fitted?
Yes. The PSDIP10024 has three flying leads already fitted, each 0.25m long: a three core 1mm² mains input lead, a two core 1.5mm² 24V output lead, and a two core 0.75mm² lead carrying the 1-10V dimming signal.
