A 200W DALI driver built to live outside
The PSDAL20024 is the heavyweight of Collingwood's 24V driver range, and it is the one to reach for when a long run of 24V LED strip or a group of 24V fittings needs more power than a small driver can supply. It makes no light of its own. Its job is to convert mains AC into a steady 24V DC supply and then dim that supply smoothly on a DALI signal. What separates it from most drivers of this size is the IP66 sealed body, so it does not have to be tucked away in a dry cupboard to survive.
The unit itself
It comes as a single black case with deep cooling ribs running along the top and both sides, which is how a 200W driver sheds the heat it makes. Flat mounting brackets extend from the base with a row of fixing holes, so it screws straight onto a wall, a joist or a plant room board. Short factory fitted leads leave the ends, colour coded so there is no guesswork: brown, blue and yellow green for the mains input, red and black for the 24V output, and a blue and white pair for DALI. A printed label on the top face repeats the model number and the input and output ratings for whoever opens the enclosure in ten years time. The body measures 255mm long, 80mm wide and 53mm high, and weighs 1.9kg.
How It Works
The mains input takes a 220 to 240V AC supply on a 3 core lead, the red and black pair carries the 24V output to your load, and the blue and white pair connects to the DALI bus. Output is 24V DC at up to 8.33A, which is 200W maximum, and it is constant voltage rather than constant current. Dimming happens entirely over DALI, so a DALI controller or a DALI capable lighting system sets the level and the driver follows. There is no dimmer needed on the mains side. Collingwood quotes 85 percent efficiency and a 0.98 power factor, and builds in short circuit, overload and overheating protection. The driver is supplied on its own, so strip, fittings and the DALI controller are all separate items.
Where It Works Best
This is a plant room, riser, loft void and under stair driver first and foremost, sited close enough to the load to keep the 24V cable run short. The IP66 rating then opens up all the places that would finish off an IP20 unit: a garage, a garden store, an eaves box, a sheltered position behind a fascia feeding an outdoor strip, or a bin store. It is a natural partner for long cove and coffer runs in a hallway or an open plan living space, for continuous strip along a kitchen island, and for a line of 24V step or path lights that all need to dim together on one DALI address. Because IP66 sits well above IP44, the driver is also sealed enough for bathroom installations, and our guide to bathroom lighting zones sets out which ratings belong where.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked in LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to put fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products in front of the UK electrical wholesale trade. Collingwood has also been awarded an EcoVadis Gold medal, placing it in the top 5 percent of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 3 year Collingwood warranty.
- IP66 rated. That means the case is fully dust tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction, so it copes with outdoor and damp positions.
- Class I, so the earth connection must be made at the mains input.
- Constant voltage output only, fixed at 24V DC, 8.33A and 200W maximum. It will not run 12V strip or constant current LED modules.
- Dimming is DALI only. There is no trailing edge, leading edge or 1 to 10V input on this driver.
- Collingwood lists an operating ambient range of minus 25°C to 50°C. Leave air space around the ribbed case so the heat has somewhere to go.
- Size the load with headroom rather than filling all 200W, and the driver will run cooler and last longer.
- Care is minimal. Brush dust off the cooling ribs now and then so they can still do their job.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
How much LED strip will the Collingwood PSDAL20024 run?
The Collingwood PSDAL20024 delivers up to 200W at 24V DC, so as a working example it would drive around 20 metres of a 24V strip rated at 10W per metre, or around 13 metres of a 15W per metre strip. Always work from the actual wattage per metre of the strip being used and leave headroom below the 200W ceiling.
Does the PSDAL20024 need a DALI controller to dim?
Yes. The Collingwood PSDAL20024 dims only over the DALI protocol, using the blue and white control pair alongside the mains and output connections. Without a DALI controller or a DALI capable lighting system it will still power the load, but it will simply run at full output.
Can the PSDAL20024 driver be installed outdoors?
Yes. The Collingwood PSDAL20024 carries an IP66 rating, which means it is dust tight and protected against powerful water jets, so it can be mounted outdoors or in a damp location without an extra enclosure. Collingwood lists an operating ambient range of minus 25°C to 50°C for the driver.
What size is the Collingwood PSDAL20024 driver?
The Collingwood PSDAL20024 measures 255mm long, 80mm wide and 53mm high, and it weighs 1.9kg. The mounting brackets sit proud of the base, so allow a little extra width and depth when planning the space it will occupy.
Is the PSDAL20024 a constant voltage or a constant current driver?
The Collingwood PSDAL20024 is a constant voltage driver with a fixed 24V DC output rated at up to 8.33A. It is intended for 24V constant voltage LED strip and 24V fittings, and it is not suitable for constant current LED modules.
