A Downlight Sealed Against the Weather From Both Sides
The H2 Pro Extreme is built for the outdoor spots that beat most downlights: porches, soffits, canopies and exposed eaves. It's rated IP65 from the front and the back, which matters because a lot of outdoor downlights only seal the visible face. Once fitted, moisture can still creep in from above the ceiling line and cause problems over time. This one is sealed the whole way round, so it holds up whether the weather is coming from below or working its way in from the void above.
This Version, In Black
This is the matte black finish, with a coating built to resist corrosion and salt spray, so it doesn't pit or dull near the coast. The body is aluminium and plastic, measuring 90mm across and 52mm deep, and it weighs just 0.2kg. It's a fixed fitting rather than an adjustable one, so once it's in place the beam stays pointed straight down, which suits the clean, low key look most porches and exteriors are going for.
How It Works
- The LED is a CSP chip built directly into the fitting, so there's no separate lamp to source or ever replace.
- It's colour switchable on site between 2200K, 2700K and 3000K, giving 480, 570 and 560 lumens respectively, which works out at roughly 96 to 114 lumens per watt depending on the tone you pick.
- Fixed at 5W, with a 40° beam angle and a CRI of 80.
- Wires straight to the mains with no separate driver to source, and is wired in parallel so it's easy to run several fittings from one circuit.
- It's mains dimmable, and needs a 65 to 75mm cut out.
Where It Works Best
This is a fitting for the places that usually cause trouble: covered porches, garage fronts, soffits and canopies, and coastal properties where salt air eats through lesser finishes. The commercial exterior tags on this product reflect that too, it's just as at home lining a shopfront canopy or a covered walkway as it is over a front door. Because the seal covers both sides of the fitting, it also copes well in consistently damp indoor spaces. If you're considering it for a bathroom, check which zone your ceiling falls into using our guide to bathroom lighting zones first.
Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has specialised in LED technology since 2002. Fittings like the H2 Pro Extreme, sealed from both sides rather than just the front, sit close to what the brand describes as one of its founding strengths: it states it was among the first to bring fully waterproof, sealed for life LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. Collingwood has also been awarded a Gold medal by EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Rated IP65 from both the front and the back of the fitting, which is unusual for an outdoor downlight and closes off the usual weak point above the ceiling line.
- Comes with a 4 year warranty and a rated lifespan of 40,000 hours.
- Certified to Part C, P and L.
- Class II double insulated, with no earth connection required.
- Aluminium and plastic construction, finished in matte black with corrosion and salt spray resistance.
- As this wires straight to the mains, Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
- Suitable for bathrooms as well as exterior use given its IP65 rating; see our guide to bathroom lighting zones to check which zone applies.
Questions People Ask
Why is it sealed on the back as well as the front?
Most outdoor downlights only seal the face you see from below, leaving the fitting open to moisture getting in from the ceiling void above. Sealing both sides to IP65 closes off that weak point, which matters in soffits, canopies and other exposed spots.
Do I need to buy a separate driver for this?
No. It wires straight to the mains with no separate driver to source or fit.
Can I change the colour temperature after it's installed?
Yes, within limits. It's colour switchable on site between 2200K, 2700K and 3000K, so you can pick whichever tone suits the space once it's fitted, though it isn't a continuously adjustable feature.
What size hole do I need to cut?
A cut out of 65 to 75mm.
Is this fitting adjustable?
No, it's fixed. Once it's installed the beam points straight down and can't be angled.
Is it suitable for a coastal property?
Yes. The black finish has corrosion and salt spray resistance built in, alongside the IP65 seal, so it's designed to hold up in salty coastal air.
