A Bollard That Looks Handcrafted, Because It Is
The BL01 is a single LED bollard built from solid timber rather than powder coated metal or plastic, giving a driveway or garden path a warmer, more natural marker than the usual aluminium or stainless steel bollard. The light sits in an angled head near the top, so it throws its beam down and across the ground rather than glaring straight out at eye level.
Three Timbers, Three Top Shapes
You choose the timber (Iroko, Oak or Sapele), the shape of the top (domed, chamfered or pointed), and how the cable enters (base entry for surface mounting, or side entry if you're recessing it into a fixed base). Iroko and Sapele are both hardwoods long used in outdoor joinery for their natural durability. Left untreated, any of the three will weather to a silvery grey outdoors over time. Oiling it occasionally will help keep the timber's original colour instead.
How It Works
- Runs a single 1W LED at your choice of 2700K, 3000K or 4000K white light, with a CRI80 for reasonably accurate colour rendering.
- Throws a 26 degree beam from the angled head, lighting the ground immediately around the bollard rather than flooding a wide area.
- Class III and low voltage, so it needs a separate transformer or driver, sized to suit however many bollards you're running from it. This isn't included.
- Wired in series, so bollards on the same run connect one after another rather than each needing its own cable back to the driver.
- The LED is built into the fitting rather than a replaceable bulb.
Where It Works Best
At 1000mm tall, with a 95 by 95mm section, the BL01 puts light around knee to waist height, useful for marking the edge of a driveway, lighting a run of garden path, or spacing along a set of steps. Because it reads as timber rather than metal, it suits a garden with a lot of planting, or a house with timber cladding or joinery, better than a stainless steel or powder coated bollard would.
Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has specialised in LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fully waterproof, sealed for life LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market, which matters for a fitting like this one that has to sit outdoors through UK weather for years. Collingwood has also been awarded a Gold medal by EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Comes with a 7 year warranty from Collingwood.
- Rated IP65, so it's built to cope with rain and being left outside year round.
- Class III, low voltage. You'll need a separate transformer sized to the number of bollards on that circuit, which isn't included.
- Each one is made to order in your chosen timber, top shape and cable entry, so lead times typically run to 25 to 50 working days.
- Weighs around 6kg, worth knowing if you're planning a surface mounted or recessed base for it.
- As the transformer end of this system is mains wired, Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Do I need to buy a transformer separately?
Yes. The BL01 runs at low voltage, so it needs a separate transformer or driver, which isn't included. Size it to cover the total number of bollards you're running on that circuit.
What's the difference between base entry and side entry cabling?
Base entry brings the cable in through the bottom of the bollard, suited to surface mounting straight onto a path or drive. Side entry brings it in through the side, suited to a recessed installation where the cable runs underground to the fitting.
Can I replace the LED if it stops working?
No. The LED is built into the fitting rather than fitted as a replaceable bulb, though it's backed by a 7 year warranty from Collingwood.
How long will my bollard take to arrive?
Each one is made to order in your chosen timber, top shape and cable entry, so lead times typically run to 25 to 50 working days.
Will the wood need any maintenance?
Left untreated, it will weather naturally to a silvery grey outdoors. An occasional oil treatment will help keep its original colour instead.
Does the top shape change how it performs?
No. Domed, chamfered and pointed tops are a styling choice. The light output, beam angle and electrics are the same across all three.
