A Downlight That Steps Down From the Ceiling
The 1901 Pendant Semi Recessed is built around the same low glare optic as Collingwood's 1901 downlight range, but instead of sitting flush, the cylindrical body drops just below the ceiling on a length of adjustable cable. It keeps most of the fitting tucked away while giving a bit more visual presence than a standard recessed downlight, useful anywhere you want a hint of pendant styling without a full drop fitting.
White Housing, Black Baffle
This version pairs a white ceiling plate and cylinder body with a black baffle inside the lens end, so the ring around the light source reads dark against the white body. It suits ceilings finished in white or pale colours, where the white housing disappears into the surface and the black baffle keeps glare down without drawing attention to the fitting itself.
How It Works
It runs at a total of 9.6W and is offered in 2700K extra warm white at around 600 lumens, 3000K warm white at around 625 to 650 lumens, or 4000K cool white at around 725 to 750 lumens, all at CRI90+ so colours and skin tones render accurately. A dim to warm option is also available, shifting from 3000K down to 1800K as it dims, closer to how a halogen bulb behaves. Beam angle is a choice of 12°, 24° or 50° on the standard colour temperatures, with the dim to warm version offered at 24° or 45°.
Dimming, whether mains, 1-10V or DALI, is handled by a driver that's supplied with the fitting and wired in via cable rather than built into the housing. Wiring is parallel, so several units can be run from one circuit, which suits a row of these over a kitchen island or along a hallway. The ceiling plate needs a 64 to 68mm cutout, and the fitting includes 1.5m of adjustable fabric cable, giving a maximum drop of 1500mm from the ceiling.
Where It Works Best
Being IP44 rated, it's suited to bathroom zone 2 as well as living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, hallways, offices, stairwells and commercial spaces. If you're planning to fit it in a bathroom, our guide to bathroom lighting zones is worth a read first to check where zone 2 falls in your room. The compact cylinder body and adjustable drop also make it a natural fit for a run above a kitchen island, where a fully suspended pendant would sit too low but a flush downlight wouldn't give the same definition.
Collingwood: British LED Design Since 2002
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has specialised in LED technology since 2002. Questions People Ask
How is this different from a standard 1901 downlight?
This version's cylinder body hangs below the ceiling on an adjustable cable rather than sitting flush, so it reads more like a small pendant while still using a semi recessed ceiling plate.
Can I fit this in a bathroom?
Yes. It's IP44 rated, which covers bathroom zone 2.
Does it come with a dimmer switch?
No. It comes with a driver matched to your chosen dimming method, mains, 1-10V or DALI, but the dimmer switch itself is bought separately to suit your circuit.
Can several of these be wired together over a kitchen island?
Yes. The wiring is parallel, so multiple units can run from a single driver and circuit, which is how they're typically used in a row above an island or along a hallway.
How far can it drop from the ceiling?
It's supplied with 1.5m of adjustable fabric cable, giving a maximum drop of 1500mm, so the height can be set to suit the room during installation.
