A fire barrier that hides above the ceiling
This fire hood sits inside the ceiling void, out of sight, so a 1901 semi recessed pendant or rotatable spot can be used where the ceiling above needs a proper fire seal. From below, the room still sees the downlight exactly as it was designed to look.
What It Actually Is
It is a cone shaped intumescent housing finished in dark grey, with small vent holes spaced around the sides and a wire fixing loop at the apex. Two bare copper coloured prongs extend from the top for securing it in place once it is positioned over the cutout.
How It Works
- Vent holes around the cone let heat escape during normal, everyday use.
- In a fire, the intumescent material inside expands to close off both the ceiling cutout and those same vent holes.
- This stops flames and smoke travelling through the ceiling void to the room or floor above.
- The 1901 pendant or spot is then fitted into place underneath, so nothing about the finished look changes.
Where It's Fitted
This hood earns its place wherever a fire barrier is needed between floors, such as above a downlight in a ceiling with a room overhead, or below a loft space that needs compartmenting. It can be fitted from above the ceiling during a first fix, or from below on a refurbishment where there's no loft access to work from.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and says it was among the first companies to bring fire rated, waterproof and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. The brand has focused on LED technology since 2002, and its sustainability record has earned it a Gold medal from EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed worldwide.
Good to Know
- This is a passive fire hood, not a light itself. It's designed specifically for use with 1901 semi recessed pendants and rotatable spots.
- It's sold on a non returnable basis, so check compatibility with your specific 1901 fitting before ordering.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician, as this forms part of a mains wired ceiling fitting.
Questions People Ask
What is a fire hood?
A fire hood is a passive housing fitted around a ceiling downlight to stop fire and smoke spreading through the ceiling void above it. It works alongside the light fitting rather than replacing any part of it.
Does it fit both the 1901 pendant and the 1901 rotatable spot?
Yes, this fire hood is designed for use with both the 1901 semi recessed pendant and the 1901 rotatable spot.
Can I fit it without loft access?
Yes. It can be fitted from above the ceiling on a first fix, or from below on a refurbishment where there is no way to reach the void from above.
Will it change how the downlight looks once it's fitted?
No. The hood sits above the ceiling line, so the pendant or spot below still looks exactly as it was designed to.
Is it returnable if I order the wrong one?
No, this product is sold on a non returnable basis, so it's worth confirming which 1901 fitting you have before ordering.
