A Dusk to Dawn Light Controller for Outdoor Lighting
The Steinel NightMatic 2000 in white is a photocell controller, also called a dusk to dawn switch. It is not a light itself. It senses the daylight level and switches the lighting connected to it on at dusk and off again at dawn, so building fronts, entrances and shop windows are lit without anyone touching a switch. It handles a resistive load of up to 1000W, and you can set the light level it reacts to between 2 and 30 lux.
White Plastic Housing
The controller has a compact white plastic housing that measures 37 x 74 x 99mm. The light sensor sits in the front face, with the Steinel logo and model name printed below it. Two screws hold the lower cover in place, and the cover is marked IP54. The white finish suits pale rendering, white cladding and painted woodwork.
How It Works
A light sensor measures the brightness outside. When it falls below the level you have set, the controller switches the connected lighting on, and when daylight returns it switches it off. The twilight threshold is adjustable from 2 to 30 lux using the setting on the unit. It is a surface mounted unit for walls, wired by cable, and it runs from a 230 to 240V, 50Hz mains supply. It is rated IP54, so it is protected against dust and splashing water. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this product.
Where It Works Best
Steinel lists it for outdoor use all round the building: front doors, courtyards, driveways, terraces and balconies. It is a good partner for outdoor wall lights, bollards and floodlights that you want to run from dusk, as well as shop window lighting. Place the sensor where it will not be lit by the lights it controls or by nearby street lighting.

Questions People Ask
What does the NightMatic 2000 do? It is a light sensing controller. It switches the lighting connected to it on at dusk and off again at dawn automatically.
Can I change how dark it gets before the light comes on? Yes. The twilight setting can be adjusted between 2 and 30 lux.
How much lighting can it control? The Steinel datasheet gives a resistive load of up to 1000W. Check the total load of the lights you plan to connect before choosing it.
Does it detect movement? No. It only responds to daylight levels, so connected lights stay on all night. For lights that come on when someone approaches, look at Steinel's motion sensor lights.
