An Automatic Dusk to Dawn Light Controller
The Steinel NightMatic 2000 in black is a photocell controller that switches outdoor lighting on at dusk and off again at dawn. It is a light sensor switch rather than a light, so it sits in the supply to your existing fittings and does the switching for you. It handles up to 1000W and is rated for LED lighting, which makes it a simple way to automate a building front, a driveway or a shop window display.
Black Plastic Housing
The case is black plastic (RAL 9005), with a small round light sensor on the front face and the Steinel name below it. A corner wall mount is included, and the unit is surface wired. The cover has two screws at the top and a separate wiring cover with two more at the bottom, with the IP54 marking moulded beside it. It measures 37 x 74 x 99mm, so it is small enough to sit neatly beside a door or on a gable wall.
How It Works
A built in light sensor measures daylight. When it falls below the level you set, the controller switches the connected lights on, and when daylight returns it switches them off. The twilight level is adjustable from 2 to 30 lux using the potentiometer on the unit. It runs from a 230 to 240V, 50Hz mains supply and uses just 0.8W itself. Steinel quotes a maximum resistive load of 1000W, 500VA for uncorrected fluorescent lamps and up to 4 LED or fluorescent lamps on the switching output. It works in temperatures from minus 20 to 50 degrees C. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this product.
Where It Works Best
Steinel lists it for outdoor use at the front door, all round the building, on a terrace or balcony, and in a courtyard or driveway. It is IP54 rated, so it is protected against dust and splashing water. Mount it where the sensor can see natural daylight and is not lit by the lamps it controls or by other lights nearby.
