A Slim Vertical Sensor Wall Light for Entrances

The Steinel L 240 S in anthracite is a slim, rectangular outdoor wall light with a built in motion sensor. It is a sensor switched LED outdoor light that turns on as someone approaches and off again after a time you choose. It gives 946 lumens from 9.3W at 3000K warm white, and the swivelling sensor covers 180 degrees with a reach of 10 metres. A good fit for a front door, side gate or garage.

Anthracite Finish with an Opal Diffuser

The tall, narrow body is finished in dark anthracite, with a smooth opal diffuser set into the front and a small white sensor head at the bottom. The store lists the materials as stainless steel and opal plastic. The anthracite sits well against dark render, brick or cladding, and the opal panel gives a soft, even glow rather than a harsh beam. It is rated IK07 for impact resistance.

How It Works

A passive infrared sensor detects movement and switches the light on. The sensor head swivels so you can point it at the approach you want to cover. Two potentiometer dials on the unit set the time it stays on, from 8 seconds to 35 minutes, and the twilight level it works at, from 2 to 2000 lux, so it stays off in daylight if you wish. The sensor works at a mounting height of 1.8 to 3 metres, with 2 metres ideal. The LED is an integrated Steinel system with a CRI of 80 to 89, and it runs from a 220 to 240V, 50 to 60Hz mains supply. Steinel suggests it for all round the building: beside a front door, on a terrace or balcony wall, or around a courtyard or driveway. It is rated IP44, so it is protected against splashing water from any direction.

Does the L 240 S switch on by itself? Yes. Its infrared sensor detects movement within a 180 degree area and a reach of 10 metres, and switches the light on automatically.

How long does the light stay on? You choose. The on time can be set from 8 seconds to 35 minutes using a dial on the unit.

Will it come on in daylight? Not if you set it not to. A twilight dial sets the brightness level the light responds to, from 2 to 2000 lux.

How high should I mount it? The sensor works at a mounting height of 1.8 to 3 metres, and Steinel gives 2 metres as the ideal height.
