A 360 Degree Motion Sensor for Indoors and Outdoors

The Steinel IS 360-3 in black is a surface mounted infrared motion detector that switches a light for you when someone comes into range. Three pyro sensors give a 360 degree detection angle and a reach of up to 12 metres, so it suits an outdoor security light setup under a soffit, in a carport, on a large house front or over a driveway. It does not give light itself. It switches the lights wired to it, up to 2000W.

Black Finish with a Tinted Lens

This version has a black plastic housing and a tinted lens, which Steinel says keeps the sensor discreet. Against a dark soffit or ceiling it sits quietly out of the way. It is a compact round unit, 121mm across and 57mm high, with a domed lens that carries the Steinel name on the rim. A white version is also made for pale ceilings.

How It Works

A passive infrared sensor with 3 pyro elements and 972 switching zones watches for movement across a full circle. Reach is up to 12 metres radially and up to 24 metres tangentially, which means walking across the field of view. You set the time the lights stay on, from 5 seconds to 15 minutes, and the twilight level it works at, from 2 to 1000 lux, using the dials on the unit. The detection area can be narrowed with the shrouds that fit over the lens, handy for keeping a neighbour's path or a road out of range. Mounting height is 2.5 to 6 metres, with 2.8 metres ideal. It runs from a 220 to 240V, 50 to 60Hz mains supply, is a Class II product and is rated IP54, so it is protected against splashing water. It works in temperatures from minus 20 to 50 degrees. Is this a light? No. The IS 360-3 is a motion sensor. It switches a separate light or lights wired to it, with a switching capacity of up to 2000W.

How wide an area does it cover? It detects through a full 360 degrees, with a reach of up to 12 metres. Walking across the sensor's field of view it reaches up to 24 metres.

Can I stop it picking up a road or a neighbour's garden? Yes. Shrouds fit over the lens to limit the detection area, so you can block off the directions you do not want it to watch.
