Steinel IS 180-2 with PIR - Silver

A Wall Sensor for Building Fronts and Driveways

The Steinel IS 180-2 in silver is a passive infrared motion sensor that switches a separate mains light on when someone walks into its zone. It covers 180 degrees, and the reach can be set to either 5 or 12 metres. That makes it a practical outdoor sensor for a wide building front, driveway or terrace. It also works indoors, in a hallway or porch for example. Note that this is a sensor only, it does not give light itself.

Silver Finish with a Domed Sensor Head

The slim rectangular housing is finished in a pale silver, with the Steinel name running up one side. A half dome sits over the sensor lens, and the multi segment lens below it is what you turn to change the reach. It measures 56 x 76 x 120mm, so it sits neatly beside a door or on a corner. The detection zone can also be shaped with shrouds, to stop it picking up a neighbouring path or a passing road.

How It Works

Two passive infrared detectors pick up movement across a 180 degree area. Turning the lens sets the reach to 12 metres or 5 metres. The time the light stays on can be set from 5 seconds to 15 minutes, and the twilight level it responds to from 2 to 2000 lux, using the two potentiometer dials. It works best at a mounting height of 1.8 to 4 metres, with 2 metres ideal. It is a mains sensor, running on 230V at 50Hz, and is a Class II product with an IP54 rating, so it is protected against dust and splashing water. Steinel rates its switching capacity at 1000W for ordinary resistive loads, so check the load rating against the lights you plan to connect. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this product.

Where It Works Best

Steinel suggests it for the front door, all round the building, a terrace or balcony, and a courtyard or driveway. It fits on a flat wall with surface wiring, or on a corner using a corner wall mount.

Questions People Ask

Does the IS 180-2 give off light? No. It is a motion sensor that switches a separate light on and off, so you need a compatible light connected to it.

How far can it detect movement? Across a 180 degree area, with the reach set to either 5 metres or 12 metres by turning the lens.

Can I stop it picking up areas I do not want covered? Yes. The detection zone can be customised with shrouds, so it ignores a pavement or a neighbour's garden, for example.

How long does the light stay on? You choose. The on time can be set from 5 seconds to 15 minutes, and the twilight dial stops it triggering in daylight, from 2 to 2000 lux.

Who should install this sensor? We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this product.

Can I return it if it is not right? Yes. You can return this item within 14 days of delivery, provided it is unused, uninstalled and in its original packaging. See our returns policy for full details.
