Steinel IS 140-2 with PIR - Black

A Motion Sensor for Entrances and Driveways

The Steinel IS 140-2 in black is a passive infrared motion sensor that switches a separate light on when someone approaches. It is a sensor, not a light, so you wire it in to control a fitting such as an outdoor wall light or floodlight. Steinel rates it for indoors and out. The sensor covers 140 degrees with a reach of up to 14 metres, which makes it a practical choice for a front door, driveway or courtyard.

Black Finish with a Swivelling Sensor Head

The housing is a smooth black, with a frosted white lens that sits in a hood and carries the Steinel logo above it. The lens turns through 180 degrees and tilts through 90 degrees, so you can point it at exactly the area you want to watch. Steinel also supplies shrouds to narrow the detection zone where you do not want it to pick up movement, such as a neighbour's drive or a passing road.

How It Works

A passive infrared sensor picks up movement and switches the connected light on. Two potentiometer dials on the unit set how long the light stays on, from 8 seconds up to 35 minutes, and the twilight level it responds to, from 2 to 2000 lux. Steinel gives a mounting height of 1.8 to 3 metres, with 2 metres ideal. It is surface wired, runs from a 230 to 240V, 50Hz mains supply and is a Class II product with an IP54 rating, so it is protected against splashing water. The sensor can switch up to 1000W of incandescent lighting. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this product.

Where It Works Best

Steinel suggests it for the front door, a terrace or balcony, a courtyard or driveway, and all round the building. It fits on a wall with surface wiring, close to the area you want to cover, and works well with an outdoor security light you already have.
