A Sensor Bollard Light for Paths and Driveways

The Steinel GL 80 SC in silver is an outdoor LED bollard light with a concealed motion sensor. It stands 63cm tall, gives 650 lumens at 3000K warm white from 9.1W, and its sensor covers 160 degrees with a reach of 5 metres. You can use it on its own beside a front door, or link several together over Bluetooth to light a path or driveway.

Silver Aluminium Base with an Opal Cover

The upright and its fixing base are made from aluminium in a silver finish, with a square opal plastic cover that Steinel describes as UV resistant. The base plate has four fixing holes, so it bolts down to a firm surface. The same bollard is also made in anthracite if you prefer a darker look.

How It Works

Steinel uses an intelligent high frequency sensor, hidden inside the housing, which picks up movement and switches the light on with a soft start. You can set the time it stays on from 5 seconds up to 60 minutes, and the twilight level from 2 to 2000 lux. A basic light level function can keep a dim night light running at 10 to 50 percent, either for 10 to 30 minutes or all night. Settings and linking with other Steinel Bluetooth lights are handled in the Steinel Connect app. The LED is built in and cannot be replaced, with a stated life of 50,000 hours. It runs from a 220 to 240V mains supply and is a Class I fitting. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting.

Where It Works Best

Steinel suggests it for gardens, front doors, courtyards and driveways, terraces and balconies, and all round the building. It is rated IP44, so it is protected against splashing water from any direction, and it works in temperatures from minus 20 to 40 degrees C.

Does the GL 80 SC switch on by itself? Yes. Its concealed high frequency sensor detects movement within 160 degrees and a reach of 5 metres, and switches the light on with a soft start.

Can it stay on dimly all night? Yes. The basic light level function holds a night light at 10 to 50 percent brightness, for 10 to 30 minutes or all night, and the light brightens to full when it senses movement.
