A Softer Kind of Sunset

The Sunset wall sconce in Opal Mat glass takes Schwung's bracket arm and single glass globe design and pairs it with the most fully diffusing of the three glass options. Rather than showing any texture or pattern, the milky opal surface hides the bulb completely and turns it into one even, softly glowing sphere, closer to a small moon on the wall than a directional light source.

Opal Mat glass is finished with a matte milky surface that scatters light evenly across the whole globe, so there are no hot spots or visible filament, just a calm, glareless glow. Of the three glass finishes Schwung offers on the Sunset sconce, it is the most straightforwardly liveable, doing its job quietly rather than asking to be noticed, which makes it the easiest of the three to place in a room without a lot of thought.

The brass bracket arm and backplate are available in Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass, or Polished Nickel, each hand finished in Poland alongside the glass.

How It Works

Each Sunset sconce takes a single E14 LED bulb (not included), rated at 5W with a warm 2700K colour temperature, and is compatible with low voltage electronic dimmers. The fitting measures approximately 15cm wide and 31cm high, projecting 16.1cm from the wall, and weighs around 1.2kg. The glass globe can be fitted facing upward or downward, so the soft glow can wash up the wall or spill gently down depending on how it is installed. Supplied as the wall fitting and brass backplate, wiring should be connected by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Because the light it throws is so even and unobtrusive, this is the version to reach for wherever calm, glareless light matters more than pattern or texture, a pair either side of a bed in place of table lamps, along a hallway or staircase where you want just enough light to move safely without any glare, or above a console table where a soft, constant glow works better than a spotlight.

Made by Schwung

Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. Every fitting, including the Sunset sconce, is made to order there in solid brass with mouth blown glass. According to Schwung, the borosilicate glass used across the range is blown thin and light, similar to a soap bubble, yet strong enough to withstand daily use in the way laboratory glass does.
