Eight Hemispheres, Wall or Ceiling

The Molecule 8 takes eight glass hemispheres on slender brass rods and mounts them flush to a single backplate, so the whole piece sits close against a ceiling or a wall rather than hanging down on a drop. It brings the Molecule family's radiating, mid century silhouette into positions where a suspended chandelier is not practical, while still reading as a genuine sculptural fitting rather than a simple flush light.

In Transparent Glass

In transparent glass, the LED inside each of the eight hemispheres stays fully visible, along with the brass rods behind them, so the fitting reads as a compact burst of individual points of light close against its mounting surface. It suits a spot where the fitting will be seen up close, a hallway, a stairwell wall, or a low ceiling where a hanging pendant would be impractical.

Choose Your Finish

The frame is available in Black Gunmetal or Lacquered Burnished Brass. Black Gunmetal keeps the transparent globes as the visual focus against a dark backplate, while Lacquered Burnished Brass lets the brass rods catch light between the glass, adding warmth to the wall or ceiling around it.

How It Works

The fitting takes 8 x E27, 5W LED bulbs, included, at 2700K warm white and around 4000 lumens combined. It is dimmable, but only with an electronic dimmer switch, and is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. It measures approximately 736mm wide by 955mm high, projecting around 234mm from its mounting surface, and weighs approximately 6.4kg. Each glass hemisphere is around 124mm in diameter, with a 119mm ceiling or wall canopy.

Where It Works Best

As a flush ceiling fitting it suits a room without the height for a hanging chandelier, a lower ceiling, a landing, or a stairwell. As a wall sconce it works well as a statement piece above a console table, flanking a fireplace, or in an entrance hall where a projecting pendant would be in the way.

Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. According to Schwung, the Molecule 8 uses the same solid brass and mouth blown glass construction as the multi arm chandeliers in the range, adapted to a flush backplate so the same silhouette works without a drop.
