A Single Globe, Softly Lit

The Globe Single Pendant is Schwung's simplest fitting: one hand blown glass globe hung from a slim brass rod off a small ceiling canopy. In Opal Mat glass it is also the most versatile of the three, a fitting that slots into almost any room without asking for attention. There is no pattern to read, no texture to notice from across the room, just a warm, even sphere of light.

Opal Mat glass fully diffuses the bulb inside it, so you see a soft, glare free glow rather than the bulb itself. It is the most liveable of Schwung's three glass types precisely because it disappears into the background. Where Marble adds visual depth and Dries Ribbon adds texture, Opal Mat keeps things quiet and even, which is why it tends to be the first choice for anyone wanting a single, dependable pendant rather than a statement piece.

Choose Your Finish

The brass frame is available in Lacquered Burnished Brass, Black Gunmetal, or Polished Nickel. Lacquered Burnished Brass has a warm, slightly aged tone that will not tarnish further thanks to its lacquer coating. Black Gunmetal gives a darker, more graphic outline against the pale glass. Polished Nickel is the coolest and most reflective of the three, suited to brighter, more contemporary rooms.

How It Works

Each pendant takes a single E14 bulb, supplied as a 5W LED (maximum rated load 10W) giving a warm 3000K white light at around 450 to 500 lumens, and runs on standard 220 to 240V mains. It is dimmable, but only with a compatible trailing edge or ELV LED dimmer, so check your existing dimmer before fitting one. The glass globe measures 20cm across, and the overall drop adjusts from around 42.5cm up to 132.5cm using the extension rods supplied in the box. The fitting weighs 2.5kg in total and is rated IP20, meaning it is designed for dry indoor use only. It is hard wired, not plug in, and comes complete with canopy, rods, and bulb.

Where It Works Best

Because the light is so evenly diffused, Opal Mat suits places where you want a soft, unfussy glow rather than a feature: over a kitchen island, beside a bed, in a hallway, or repeated at staggered drops above a dining table. It also works well as a single central pendant in a small room, since it fills the space with light without becoming the focal point.

Made by Schwung

Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. Every fitting, including this one, is made to order in solid brass and mouth blown glass at the Namyslow workshop. According to Schwung, the studio's approach favours the honesty of the material and the simplicity of the form over applied decoration, which is exactly what the Globe Single in Opal Mat sets out to demonstrate.

Questions People Ask

Can the Opal Mat glass be dimmed?
Yes, but only with a dimmer switch designed for LED loads, specifically trailing edge or ELV. A standard leading edge dimmer built for old style bulbs may cause flickering or buzzing.

Is this pendant suitable for a bathroom?
No. It is rated IP20, which means it is intended for dry indoor rooms only and should be kept away from bathroom splash zones.
