Light With Texture, Not Just Colour
Most pendants change how a room looks. The Globe Single Pendant in Dries Ribbon glass changes how the light itself behaves. It is the same simple format as every Globe Single, one hand-blown globe on a slim brass rod from a small ceiling canopy, but the glass inside is drawn into fine vertical threads while it is still hot, so the light that escapes it is broken up rather than smooth.
In Dries Ribbon Glass
Dries Ribbon is the most characterful of Schwung's three glass types. Delicate drawn threads run through the glass, catching and refracting the light into fine, intricate shadows that move across nearby walls and ceilings as the bulb warms up or as you walk past. Because each globe is mouth-blown and drawn by hand, the ribboning is never perfectly identical from one globe to the next, which is part of the appeal for anyone who wants a fitting with a handmade, slightly imperfect quality rather than a uniform, mass-produced look.
Choose Your Finish
The brass frame comes in Lacquered Burnished Brass, Black Gunmetal, or Polished Nickel. Lacquered Burnished Brass has a warm, softly aged look and is lacquered so it will not need repolishing. Black Gunmetal reads darker and more graphic, letting the ribbon patterns in the glass stand out against a black frame. Polished Nickel is bright and reflective, a cooler counterpart that suits more contemporary settings.
How It Works
Each pendant takes a single E14 bulb, supplied as a 5W LED (maximum rated load 10W), giving a warm 3000K white light at around 450 to 500 lumens, and runs on standard 220 to 240V mains. It is dimmable, but only with a compatible trailing edge or ELV LED dimmer. The glass globe measures 20cm across, and the overall drop adjusts from around 42.5cm up to 132.5cm using the extension rods included in the box. Total weight is approximately 2.5kg, and the fitting is rated IP20, for dry indoor use only. It is hard wired rather than plug in, and arrives complete with canopy, rods, and bulb.
Where It Works Best
The textured shadow this glass throws makes it a natural fit anywhere the light itself gets noticed: over a dining table, in a hallway or entrance where a single pendant sets the tone as you walk in, or beside a bed where the shifting pattern on the ceiling adds atmosphere rather than glare. It also reads well hung solo as a statement piece in a small room, since the ribbon effect gives it presence without needing scale.
Made by Schwung
Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. Every fitting is made to order in solid brass and mouth blown glass at the Namyslow workshop, and the Dries Ribbon glass in particular relies on the glassblower's hand to draw each thread, so no two globes come out quite the same. According to Schwung, that variation is intentional, treated as a mark of the handmade process rather than a flaw to be engineered out.
Good to Know
- Made to order in Poland, estimated lead time of 4 to 6 weeks
- Not returnable, as with all Schwung fittings, since each one is made to order
- Globe diameter approximately 20cm, adjustable drop from around 42.5cm to 132.5cm using the extension rods supplied
- Total weight approximately 2.5kg
- Takes 1 x E14 LED bulb, 5W supplied, maximum rated load 10W, 3000K warm white, roughly 450 to 500 lumens
- IP20 rated, dimmable with a compatible trailing edge or ELV LED dimmer
- Each globe is individually hand drawn, so slight variation in the ribbon pattern between globes is normal and expected
- Brass care: clean regularly with a soft cloth or duster, a damp cloth can also be used, dry the frame fully before switching back on, do not use cleaning agents on brass parts
- Glass care: clean the outside with a soft dry cloth, use a damp cloth first on dirtier glass, a gentle glass cleaner will lift grease
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician
Questions People Ask
Will every globe look exactly the same?
Not quite. Because the ribbon texture is drawn by hand during the glassblowing process, small variations between individual globes are normal and are part of what makes each one handmade rather than mass produced.
Does the ribbon pattern affect how much light comes through?
It changes the character of the light rather than the overall brightness, breaking it into fine shadows and highlights instead of the even glow you get from a plain diffused glass.
