Four ribbed glass shades sit in a neat line along a slim brass bar, each one throwing its light down and forward rather than up into your eyes when you lean over the basin. It suits a run of mirror wider than a single sink, the kind of wall you get in a family bathroom or an ensuite built around two basins.

Choosing Your Finish

This fitting comes in Brushed Brass, a warm honeyed gold with a soft, brushed texture rather than a mirror shine, and you can see that texture clearly across the round wall plate and the curved arms in the photos. The same design is also made in Polished Chrome, a cooler and much more reflective finish for bathrooms built around chrome taps and towel rails. Both versions share identical fluted opal glass shades, so the decision really comes down to the metal already in the room.

How It Works

Each of the four arms takes a 3.5W G9 lamp, so you will need four bulbs in total and none are supplied with the fitting. It will dim, but only if you fit dimmable G9 bulbs on a compatible dimmer switch, a standard G9 will not dim no matter what switch controls it. The fitting is wired to Class I, which means it relies on a proper earth connection, so it should be fitted by a qualified electrician rather than swapped in as a DIY job. It carries an IP44 rating, giving it enough protection against splashes to sit within the bathroom lighting zones around a basin or bath.

Where It Works Best

Mounted centrally above a double basin or a long vanity mirror, the four shades spread light evenly across a wider run of glass than a single sconce could manage alone. At 81.3cm end to end it needs a decent stretch of wall, so measure your mirror or basin run before you order. Where the wall is narrower, or you only need light beside one mirror, Quoizel makes the Swell as a single light sconce too, one shade instead of four, better suited to a smaller room or a pair either side of a cabinet.

Quoizel began in 1930 as a small lamp company in Manhattan, and it is still privately owned today, now run by the Phillips family who bought the business outright in 1986. In 1996 the company left New York altogether, moving its headquarters, manufacturing and distribution to a 305,000 square foot site near Charleston, South Carolina, where it remains. That move brought a Southern, low country sensibility into the design studio, and it still shows in the mix of traditional and coastal styling across the range, this fitting included.
