Some bathroom fittings try to do everything at once. The Kolt single wall light does one thing well: a compact chrome arm holding a double layered glass shade, sized to sit neatly beside a mirror or cabinet without crowding the wall.

The Chrome and the Glass

This one comes in a single finish, a bright polished chrome that keeps the metalwork looking sharp rather than brushed or matte. The shade itself does the real work of the design. An outer cylinder of clear glass, gently squared rather than perfectly round, wraps around an inner sleeve of sandblasted opal glass. The result in the photos is a soft, even glow rather than a visible bulb, with the clear outer layer catching the light at the edges.

How It Works

The fitting takes one 3.5W LED G9 bulb, which is not supplied, so you will need to source your own before installation. It is dimmable if you fit dimmable G9 lamps, though the fitting itself has no built in dimmer. This is a Class I fitting, which means it must be earthed, and as a hardwired wall light it should be fitted by a qualified electrician rather than plugged in.

Where It Works Best

Rated IP44, this is one of the few wall lights genuinely suited to a bathroom, provided you keep it out of the zones that call for a higher rating. At 23.2cm tall and only 12.7cm wide, this single version is the narrowest fitting in the Kolt bathroom range, which makes it the one to choose either side of a mirror or in a tighter run of wall where the two and three light versions would not fit comfortably.

Founded on Oil, Not Electricity

Quoizel started in 1930 in Manhattan, founded by Michael Chaikin as a small maker of lamps. The first products it sold were not electric at all. They were hurricane lamps, designed to burn oil, at a time when plenty of American homes still needed them. One of those early designs, the Abigail Adams lamp, stayed in the catalogue for decades after the company had long since moved into electric lighting. It is a strange thing to trace back a simple chrome bathroom light to oil lamps from the 1930s, but the same company has been making both.
