Five Candles Standing On A Wide Pale Ring
No glass, no shade, nothing to soften it. Five arched ribs fall from a small cap to a broad flat ring, five candle lamps stand upright on shallow drip pans along the top of it, and twisted metal leaves curl underneath into a little collar and a ball. It looks bent by hand, which is the whole idea.
Antique White Up Close
This is not a bright white. It is a chalky off white with a sandy gold wash rubbed through wherever an edge would naturally wear: the lip of every drip pan, the base of each candle tube, the curl of the leaves, the ball at the bottom. In the close photographs that gold reads clearly and stops the frame looking flatly painted. Against a white ceiling the metal almost dissolves and what you notice is the silhouette rather than the fitting. The same frame comes in Grey Ash, a dark speckled charcoal, and that is the one to choose if you want contrast instead of quiet.
How It Works
The frame hangs on oval link chain from a flat round ceiling plate, joined by a ring at the top cap where the five ribs gather. The shortest drop the chain allows is 68.8cm, extending up to 316.6cm at its longest, and links come out or go back in to set the height you want. Five E14 lamps are needed and none are supplied. It will dim, but only with dimmable lamps fitted, because the dimming happens in the lamp and not in the fitting. It is Class I, so it has to be earthed at the ceiling point, and being hardwired it is a job for a qualified electrician. Steel, 6.6kg, which is worth knowing before you trust an old ceiling rose with it.
Where It Works Best
63.6cm across is a proper dining table width, and at 60.8cm tall it wants headroom, so give it a decent ceiling or a table to hang over. Above a dining table, down a stairwell, or in a large bedroom with the chain let out to its full 316.6cm. The four light pendant in this family is a much smaller thing at 40.5cm wide, and it encloses its lamps inside a bell of ribs so the light presses downward. This chandelier does the reverse. Five bare lamps sit on top of the ring with nothing above them but open frame, so light goes up onto the ceiling and out sideways, which lifts a whole room rather than spotlighting one surface.
Quoizel As A Maker
Most people who know the name know it for glass. Quoizel built a large part of its reputation on Tiffany style stained and leaded work, then pushed that beyond table lamps into chandeliers, pendants and wall fittings. Coming across a frame like this from the same company is a reminder that the glass was never the whole business. Take the shades away and what is left is metalwork, and metalwork is where all the effort has gone here.

Questions People Ask
How much bigger is this than the four light pendant? Quite a lot. 63.6cm wide against 40.5cm, and 60.8cm tall against 51.3cm, so it needs a good deal more clear space around it and reads as a chandelier rather than a single pendant.
What lamps does it need, and are they supplied? Five E14 lamps, not supplied. All five stand in full view on top of the ring, so the lamp you pick is part of the look. Clear candle lamps with a visible filament work better here than plain opal.
Can it go in a bathroom? No IP rating is quoted for this chandelier, so treat it as a dry indoor fitting and keep it out of bathrooms and anywhere it could catch steam or splashes.
