Mullan Kirhii Pendant - Red Iron with Finish Options

Red Iron is the most visceral of the Mullan ceramic finishes, and on the Kirhii Pendant it hits with exactly the right balance of warmth and weight. The shade is shaped and hand painted at the ceramics studio in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, with the red iron tones ranging from warm terracotta through to deeper, more complex rust and ochre within the same surface. The finish is achieved through a hand painting and firing process that produces natural variation across every individual shade, meaning the piece you receive is different from every other Kirhii Red Iron that has ever left the kiln. That is not a manufacturing inconsistency — it is the entire point of handmade ceramic work.

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor inside a restored 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village. The ceramics studio was developed to carry on the village's deep rooted identity as a community of makers, with ceramicist Stephen Kieran creating the finishing techniques that define the collection. His design vision for the red iron finish was to evoke the iron rich soils and weathered stone surfaces of the Irish countryside — to bring something of the outside into the interiors the lights would eventually inhabit. Today Mullan employs over 100 people and exports its handmade ceramic lights to more than 55 countries worldwide.

The Kirhii Red Iron pendant is a natural above a dining table, where the earthy warmth of the shade creates exactly the kind of convivial atmosphere that a meal deserves. It works equally well above a kitchen island with natural stone or timber worktops, in a living room where the interior palette draws on warm neutrals and natural materials, or in a bedroom where the red iron finish adds depth and character to what might otherwise be a plain white ceiling. This is a pendant that looks as good unlit as it does glowing.

Available with antique brass, antique silver, matte black, polished brass and satin brass fittings. Made to order at Mullan Village using sustainable clay and recycled brass, with an approximate three week production lead time. This is handmade Irish ceramic pendant lighting with a finish full of warmth, history and character.
