The Kirhii Pendant in Blue Earth is a wide, low IP44 bathroom pendant, 13.7cm tall and 27cm wide, with a ceramic shade hand painted in layered ocean and teal tones at Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Seen from below with the bulb lit, the blue earth glaze seems to hold its own light rather than simply reflect the room around it. In daylight it reads cooler and closer to open water, while the warm glow of an evening bulb brings out deeper, richer tones in the same surface. Because every shade is painted individually by hand, the balance of those tones is unique to each piece.

How It Works

A glass diffuser is fitted beneath the ceramic shade, providing the IP44 rating and softening the E27 bulb's light into an even glow across the bathroom. As the bulb warms in the evening, the blue earth ceramic above takes on richer, warmer tones than it shows in daylight, so the pendant changes character through the day. It is compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs for full control over brightness and mood.

Where It Works Best

Above a freestanding bath, the Kirhii Blue Earth introduces colour and calm to a room that might otherwise rely entirely on white tile and chrome fittings. In a shower room or wet room with pale stone, limewash plaster or white metro tile, the blue earth tones read clearly and add warmth without overwhelming the space. Being rated for Zone 2, it can be positioned in the area beyond 0.6m from the edge of a bath or shower.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Blue earth is one of the original finishes developed for the ceramics collection, with ceramicist Stephen Kieran drawing its palette from the dark greens and blues of the Irish landscape, its fields, rivers and coastal light. More than 100 craftspeople now work at the studio, and every piece is made entirely to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, with finished lights reaching more than 55 countries.

FAQs

Which bathroom zone is this rated for?
The Kirhii Pendant is IP44 rated for Zone 2, the area beyond 0.6m from the edge of a bath or shower where protection against water splashing from any direction is required. It is not suitable for Zone 0 or Zone 1. Please check with your installer if you are unsure which zone applies.

Can I use this above a freestanding bath?
Yes, provided the installation point falls within Zone 2. Your NICEIC electrician will confirm the exact zone based on the position of the bath and the proposed hanging point.

Does the blue earth colour change throughout the day?
Yes. It reads cooler and more aquatic in daylight and takes on richer, warmer tones under an evening bulb.

Can I use a dimmable bulb?
